My mother has been at Ponte Palmero for a couple of weeks now. I give all the staff a 10. They are so good, and compared to where she was before, this place is a palace. Everybody is so much more attentive and nicer. We've had no problems so far. It's been absolutely wonderful. Cleanliness is excellent. They have lots of programs and encourage you to participate. She's very happy to do the exercise class, and they're not overbearing or pressuring. They're very nice and have done a good job of getting her included. The facility looks great and well kept up, and the activities are great. It's a little pricy, but it's worth it. They're giving everything that they say they give you.

Ponte Palmero was very nice, but it was too expensive. It was very clean, had lots of activities, beautiful environment, and nice apartments. They had an exercise room and a pool. We just can't afford it. The staff was wonderful.

I loved Eskaton Village Placerville. They have an indoor pool, which was one of the things that would be really nice. The only thing that they had to show us was a small studio. It was a little cottage, which was really cute, but for two people it was just way too small.

We like the housing in Ponte Palmero. We have a 2-bedroom and 2-bath unit with a full kitchen. They also provide all the amenities like meals, maintenance, and all that. The staff was very friendly and on top of things all the time, we just felt really comfortable. We like it has a country feel because it's not in the middle of the city. The place is pretty and well-taken care of. They also provide plenty of activities.

Ponte Palmero was too big and it was old. The gentleman that took us on the tour was nice, but he forgot to give us lunch. We were supposed to go there and have a bite of their food and we never did, but it was alright. I thought it wouldn't be too conducive for my mother because she is not really ambulatory. There were stairs. I was not as impressed. The rooms were big, but they weren't conducive for her. The lighting seemed to be too dark.

Eskaton Lodge Cameron Park was horrible. We went in there, and they were having a church service. The woman at the front desk was so unprofessional. She was taking us in the rooms and they hadn't even checked with some of the residents if it was OK if we walked in. She didn't offer a lot of information. I didn't like it at all. It was old and dirty looking to me.

Eskaton Village Placerville was a very nice facility. We really liked it. They were very knowledgeable. My father had dementia and the facility was very knowledgeable about different treatments and different care procedures. We really enjoyed the tour. We checked out the menu and it was very good.

Ponte Palmero was a very nice facility that was closer to my house. I would have lived there. The food and amenities were first-class. They had lovely gardens and garages, which was different because most people didn’t drive. The independent living units were very nice, but there wasn't any space in memory care.

Eskaton was very well kept and took really good care of my loved one. I was pleased with the place. The staff was right there when he needed help.
According to Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care study, the average monthly rate for assisted living in El Dorado County ($4,473) is on par with the state average of $4,500, and both are about $500 higher than the national average of $4,000. Seniors comparing the cost of care in El Dorado County need to recognize the factors that influence rate differences within the local area, such as the type of setting, the level of care and whether specific services are offered. Both assisted living communities and nursing homes provide residential care, but nursing home rates are almost double those of assisted living because of the level of specialized care these facilities offer. Those debating assisted living versus in-home care need to consider that residential care rates typically include room and board. In contrast, home health aide and homemaker rates are more expensive and only cover provided services, so a senior still faces expenses such as property taxes, food, utility bills and home maintenance.

More than 72 million Americans receive health care services through Medicaid, the federal and state government-funded program that serves low-income families with children, pregnant women and blind, disabled and elderly adults. Medi-Cal, the California Medicaid program, provides eligible state residents with free or low-cost medical services that include preventive care, doctors appointments, hospital and emergency care, physical therapy, prescriptions and dental services.
Seniors may qualify for Medi-Cal benefits if they meet these income and resource requirements:
State Supplemental Payment
Low-income people with few resources who receive Supplemental Security Income benefits from the federal government may also qualify for the California State Supplemental Payment. To be eligible for SSI benefits, seniors are allowed a maximum monthly income of $771 per person or $1,157 if married and must meet the asset limits for Medi-Cal coverage. They must also be 65 or older, blind or disabled and apply for any other available benefit programs. If approved, an individual may receive up to $160.62 and couples up to $407.14 per month in addition to their SSI benefit.
El Dorado County residents can call the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213 to apply for the SSI and SSP programs.
Long-Term Care Insurance
Seniors who plan to move to an assisted living community in the future may consider long-term care insurance as an option to cover the cost. Some long-term care policies have deductibles and co-payments similar to standard health insurance plans while others pay for covered benefits on a reimbursement basis. An applicant must provide their health history details, and those with health problems may pay higher premiums for coverage.
Seniors can contact Elderlife Financial Services at (888) 228-4500 for help clarifying the details of a long-term care policy or with filing a claim.
