I visited this facilityReview of Eskaton Land Park

Eskaton Monroe Lodge was the first place I toured. It's an older facility, it's very nice, it's six stories, it doesn't have a large landscaped area, and it's right on Freeport Boulevard, so it's slightly noisier than the other places. It's a little more expensive; it's $3,500 a month. They have a nursing staff that can come in at an additional cost so you don't have to move if you have a short-term health problem. They allow pets.

Golden Pond was a little darker than other facilities, but its also not as expensive as the other places. I probably would have picked them. They have activities, a library, a theater, and everything you need to do. I stopped and talked to the gentleman who was eating and he seemed very happy. Its one long building, and they have very nice people.

We visited Rivers Edge. They were very nice, we had lunch there, and the person who helped us was very good and very open. We felt like it was a well-run place, and its something we would consider because of the location. The staff member was very nice, willing to help, and showed us around. The people we met were very good.

I visited this facilityReview of Eskaton Land Park

I looked at Eskaton Monroe Lodge. It didn't offer as much as other communities do, and it was more expensive. They didn't provide all of the meals, just one big lunch. If you don't make it in time, they'll give you a bagged lunch with various things in it. The place was very small. The bathroom, the living room, bedrooms, and kitchen area were very small. The staff members were nice and pleasant.

Our mother lived at Land Park Place for four years before her recent passing. In her nineties and coping with dementia, she found a home there. The staff were very professional ensuring that our mother was safe and supported — and treated her like family. They kept us informed of her well-being and effectively dealt with several emergency instances during her stay. In the end, our mother pass away surrounded by family and caring staff in a place where she felt safe. We will always be grateful that Land Park Place was there when our mother needed their help.

My mother is in Carefree Senior Living - North Natomas. It's a very nice community for seniors that has lots of activities for them. The transportation to and from stores and different events is great. She is in a cottage with a garage. It's like a little house, so it's very accommodating for her. She has two dogs and a patio outside for them, so it works out really well for her. The staff who handles the administration is very good. Food is not provided. She cooks her own food.

The staff members at Carefree Senior Living - North Natomas are very patient and very caring. If you have any maintenance issues, they get the results right away. They seem to be interested in anything that you have an issue with. During move-in, everything was just beautiful. They repainted, recarpeted, and they put new linoleum in the kitchen. There are a few drawbacks. Their dishwasher is really old, so it's very noisy. The refrigerator is small and not very user-friendly. It doesn't really have a lot of drawers to put things in. It's an inexpensive refrigerator, and that part I don't like either. There are two fans in the apartment and they are noisy. Other than that, there are good things about it as well. There's no caretaking here, just senior apartments with activities in their clubhouse. They have a variety of things and different kinds of card games, happy hour on Friday nights, dancing, and some food. They have hot breakfast once a week. They have a bus that takes you out to different locations every day. There's a lot of activities. They just had a Christmas party last night.

The rooms are really nice. They're a little bigger, but there aren't as many. They have a bathroom, shower, and grab bars everywhere to help prevent falls. There's a refrigerator, some cabinets, and a sink. The staff has been very friendly and understanding. The food is not as good, but still good. My sister goes to sit and be fit class where they do exercises in their chairs, and she enjoys the music.

Country Club Manor is one level, open, and close to stores. They serve at least one meal a day, it's optional to have more but it'll cost you. I went there on a Saturday so the person that gave the tours wasn't there, but I liked the place. One of the services they provide is housekeeping. They should have better communication for when people go there on the weekends, instead of just saying that they can only go on Mondays to Fridays.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Sacramento

Medicaid in California

California’s state Medicaid Managed Care program is called Medi-Cal. Medi-Cal provides financial support, assistive services and access to health care to low-income Californians, including seniors and individuals who are living with disabilities. Medi-Cal programs are funded in part by the state with support from the federal government. In order to apply for financial support and access necessary services, seniors who reside in assisted living facilities must apply to either the Assisted Living Waiver program or the Multipurpose Senior Services Program.

To be eligible for these waivers, seniors must be assessed for their level of need and be determined to require daily care. Financially, individual applicants can’t have an income that exceeds $1,242 or assets valued at more than $2,000, while couples combined income shouldn’t exceed $1,682 or have assets valued at more than $3,000.

The Assisted Living Waiver provides financial aid and services to seniors who reside in assisted living facilities. Some of the services that are covered by the Assisted Living Waiver include nurse visits, medical and dental care, physical therapy and nonemergency transportation. This waiver program only covers the cost of care and services in assisted living facilities and doesn’t cover room and board fees.

The Multipurpose Senior Services Program (MSSP) is another waiver program that operates under California’s Medi-Cal system. The waiver was created to reduce the number of seniors living in nursing homes throughout the state and reduce the stress this causes on the state’s Medicaid programs. The MSSP provides additional support to seniors who reside in assisted living facilities or at home and require a nursing level of care. The program covers a range of services including daily nurse visits, nonmedical transportation and respite care.

The MSSP is capped at 12,000 participants, and waiting lists are common. In addition to the aforementioned eligibility requirements, seniors must be able to reside safely in an assisted community or in their home.

State Supplemental Payment

California’s State Supplemental Payment (SSP) is a cash benefit that may be provided to low-income seniors who reside in a residential care facility. The benefit is meant to aid seniors in paying for the cost of room and board in assisted living and nursing care facilities. Benefit payments are calculated based on the applicant’s income. The maximum SSP payment is $160.72 per month.

Elderlife Bridge Loan

Elderlife Financial Services offers flexible-term, low-interest bridge loans that can provide temporary relief to seniors who need help with the cost of assisted living. Loans are issued to the senior’s residence and paid back by the senior in monthly installments. Although eligibility depends on credit history and income, seniors may include up to six cosigners on their application, which can help to increase the likelihood of approval and reduce monthly payments.
