The Executive Director is very compassionate and keeps the community on point. I see her wearing all hats to help make the community a great, comfortable and inviting place to live. She is very much involved in making sure the family members are comfortable and have what they need. The r apartments are different sized for residents needs. . Most of the care staff has been in place for many years. For me, this indicates a love for their work. I have been a part of this community for 8 yesrs...It is the people that keeps me here, the smiles, the caring, the love. Every community has its flaws, one in the bunch that doesn't want to be there. Here, that one is found out quickly and removed expeditiously. Brookdale Lowry is extraordinary. The staff will go the extra mile to create an environment for your loved one to have peace and enjoy the rest of their life. In a nut shell, the staff CARES!

My mother lived in Brookdale University Park before. It was terrible, the staff was not nice, not pleasant, and the turnover was continuous. My mom's apartment didn't get hot water on a regular basis. If you want to have a meal in their restaurant, it takes you three hours to get a ham sandwich, and when COVID came along, they absolutely locked everything down, provided no service, and meals on their doors. These are independent living people, not assisted. They locked down the library, they were rude to those of us who had family there; it couldn't have been worse. They would yell at the residents if they were trying to get some toilet paper. I think some people they will yell, "You can call King Soopers." It was just terrible. I couldn't express how awful they were. It was very expensive. They need to get new management from the top down, and get rid of the front desk staff. Everyone was just rude. It was no fun to go visit my mother there. She was happy 'cause mostly she didn't leave her room, and she did have a beautiful view. If you're in Colorado and you can see the mountains, it's a good day! But now the whole place just couldn't have been less friendly.

Quincy Place was very nice. I had a meal there and I sat with three other older ladies; they were very nice. The person during the tour was very helpful. The dining area was very comfortable, but the food was a little spicy for my taste. I saw a smaller room and a bigger room, and they were all very nice. The cleanliness was real good.

My mother has been at Quincy Place since March. It is a really nice, clean place with really good food. The staff members are very concerned about Mom. They're always there checking out on her. It is really a good place and they're all excellent. She has a studio there. Amenities are bingo, movies, workout places, church, laundry, and hairstylist. They have about everything in there. They're sending me emails every other day. She also likes the meals. The place is really nice and clean.

Brookdale Tamarac Square is great. I'm very happy with this place. The food is good. The staff is very friendly and very helpful. The only negative I can think of is when we moved in the rug was very filthy. We have been asking to have it cleaned ever since we moved in. It hasn't been done, and it is still filthy. Also, the cost is high.

The only thing that I didn't like about Quincy Place was it only had one elevator, so we had to stand in line to get into the elevator. To have just one in a multi-storied building is not adequate since elevators break down and need service. Everything else was fine. The rooms and dining room were nice and the people working there were very hospitable. They had plenty of activities. I couldn't see any grounds except a place to park your car.

Brookdale University Park was beautiful. The amenities were topnotch and so were the activities. The lady who gave us the tour was fantastic, very compassionate, and knew all about the facility. Had we not elected to keep my mom at home, we would have definitely chosen that facility. We had dinner there and there were multiple choices. The dining room was incredibly clean and very efficient. The rooms were lovey, updated, and spacious. They all have balconies. They're very bright, they have full kitchens, and the appliances were very easy to use, so anyone who potentially couldn't see very well or even doesn't have a knack for new technology could use them in a very easy way. They have a lovely outdoor space that has a walking area and barbecue area.

I didn't like Sunrise of Pinehurst. When I walked in, it smelled like urine. The rooms were OK, but they were not really as advertised in my opinion. What they consider a one-bedroom is really just in a C shape. It's one giant room that's separated by a bathroom. They have the same kind of amenities that most places have. They have some activity rooms and a cafe.

Care Cost Comparison
The type of care a senior needs greatly impacts total cost. For example, in Denver, an individual who is able to care for many of their own daily needs in an assisted living facility will incur, on average, around $3,600 less expenses, as opposed to someone who needs a higher level of medical services and care that requires a nursing home. Regular professional care in the home is slightly more expensive in the Denver area than assisted living facility costs. Homemaker services and home health aide services cost between $804 and $6,516 more per year versus the cost of living in the comfort and safety of an assisted living facility. It’s also important to note that the costs of assisted living tend to cover most living expenses, including meals and rent. The costs of in-home services only cover the care, not the expenses associated with the upkeep of a home, eating or transportation. Cost of Homemaker/Home Health Aide Comparison Chart
- Assisted living: $4,700
- Homemaker services: $4,767
- Home health aide: $5,243
- Adult day health: $1,625

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Denver
Medicaid in Colorado
Colorado’s Medicaid program is called Health First Colorado. It pays for a variety of medical services, including various home health or nursing home expenses, for individuals that meet income requirements. Adults up to age 65 must meet MAGI (modified adjusted gross income) guidelines. The guidelines for Colorado’s Medicaid program as of April 2018 for a family of one person between the ages of 18 and 65 is $1,346 per month. For a senior couple within those age ranges, the MAGI requirement is $1,825 per month.
After age 65, individuals usually switch to the federally provided Medicare program as their primary health coverage, but you may still qualify for Medicaid as your secondary insurance. Individuals who didn’t pay enough into the Medicare system over the years to get Medicare Part A without a premium may also be able to qualify for Colorado’s Medicare Savings Plan, which is a Medicaid program that helps to cover the cost of Medicare premiums.
Both Medicare and Medicaid provide coverage for some long-term care provisions and services that might be available in an assisted living facility. However, Colorado Medicaid doesn’t specifically cover assisted living costs outside of waiver programs. You can apply for Health First Colorado in a number of ways, including online, in person at local application sites, via a printed application in the mail and by calling 1-800-221-3943/State Relay: 711.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE)
To qualify for PACE benefits under Health First Colorado, Seniors must be at least 55 years old and able to live safely in a community setting. They also have to meet some medical service requirements and live in a PACE area. Denver and the surrounding county are within the PACE area. PACE helps cover a range of services for older adults, including dentistry, optometry, durable medical equipment, transportation for medical appointments, caregiver education and respite care. Some of these benefits can be used while in an assisted living facility.
To qualify for PACE, seniors first have to apply for and receive Medicaid benefits under Health First Colorado.
Home and Community-Based Services Waivers
Colorado also offers various home and community-based waivers to assist with additional points of care. One of them is the Elderly, Blind, & Disabled Waiver, which is available to qualifying adults with specific disabilities. Those age 18 to 64 must have an HIV or AIDs diagnosis, be blind or have a physical disability to qualify for this benefit. Individuals age 65 and older can qualify for this waiver if they have a significant impairment in function as determined by medical professionals.
The financial requirements for this program requires individuals to demonstrate an income less than three times the amount that federal SSI is paying each month, and seniors must have countable assets (or resources, such as cash savings) of less than $2,000 if single or $3,000 for married couples.
This waiver can help pay for a variety of services including, but not limited to, adult day services, homemaker services, modifications to homes, alternative care services, transportation (not just for medical purposes), personal care services and respite care. These benefits can be used while seniors are in an assisted living facility to cover these types of costs.
After applying for Colorado Medicaid, you can contact your Single Entry Point agency to apply for these waivers. The office that serves the Denver area is located at 11100 Bethany Drive, Aurora, CO, 80014, or call the office at (877) 710-9993.
