My aunt is in Boca Raton Rehabilitation Center for rehab. She's doing well, and her condition has improved greatly from when she was admitted. Everything she told me was very positive. She thinks the staff is very attentive, and she's getting along very well. The food is fine, too. At 98 years old, the one thing she hasn't lost is her appetite. She eats very well, and she's happy with that. They're doing a great job for her, but communicating with them is difficult. They don't return telephone calls or emails, and when you call into the switchboard, the people who man it don't tend to be very attentive. They'd say, "Hold on a second, I gotta transfer you to a nurse's station." When they do so, the phone will ring and ring and ring, and nobody answers it. That's frustrating for me. My aunt is happy with the service she's getting there, and they're all making good progress with her. It's just me, being frustrated from the outside, and also being 3000 miles away from her to try to get updates, so I can make arrangements for her, sign certain documents for her, and so I can manage her medical care from a distance. I would probably give it a rating of 3 because of the communication, but the services given to her internally, I'd give it a strong 4, turning to a 5, because she's very happy with it. I think it's a fairly decent facility. Although it's an older one, they've done some remodeling. Due to COVID, they would not allow me to go inside into the room. I stand outside the window and speak to my aunt while she was under quarantine when she first got transferred in there. They won't let anybody visit with her personally, until she's been quarantined and tested for COVID for two weeks, and that's already happened. When I go back there three weeks from now, I will meet with her face-to-face, not through a window anymore or over the phone. I'd give the reception and the staff in the office a rating of 3, while the people who work with the patients in their rooms or nurses and other service providers that are working directly with the patients a 4. Up until now, everything has been covered by the insurance that my aunt has, so money has not been an issue. Even the cost that they have quoted me, if we have to come out of pocket for anything, has been reasonable and in line with what I would expect.

Stratford Court of Boca Pointe Boca Raton is a huge facility. It's actually close to my house, so it's geographically better, but it's just too big for my mother. It's a beautiful facility; I loved the koi pond. The staff member was so nice, and she answered all my questions. She gave me a tour of the facility, showed me a couple of the apartments that were open and available for move in, and she was very helpful. I checked the dining area and it was very nice, very clean, and they had a little bistro as well that looked lovely.

My sister moved into Stratford Court of Boca Pointe. I think it's going to work for her, and the care is good. They have bingo, exercise programs, arts and crafts, they take them out to different activities, like a play, to dinner once a week, and to a different restaurant each week. I've eaten there, the food is good, and there's plenty of it. The staff is very helpful, friendly, she keeps meeting new people, and she's making friends. They have a library, a computer area they can use, a hair salon, doctors come in once a week, and the place is well-thought out. They have places where people can sit, they have live entertainment, and they have movies each week.

Stratford Court of Boca Pointe is lovely. We weren't sure if both of my parents would be moving there, but they had every option covered, which was wonderful. I like the amenities and the people who live there. It was everything we wanted. The staff is generally very good, but we've had a few hiccups since my mother has been there. There's a little trouble with the follow through. The food is delicious; she likes it. It's expensive, but it's worth it.

The Atrium at Boca Raton was very lovely and nice. I was very impressed with it. Architecturally, the rooms were not very nice. The inside was very pretty and new. The dining room was lovely, the food was very good, and it was served very elegantly. The staff was very friendly and nice. The atmosphere was nice and it had a good feeling to it. The smell was good and it was overall a very positive experience. It would certainly be something I'd consider if the rooms were nicer. They showed us a schedule of activities which looked adequate.

Stratford Court of Boca Pointe has too much walking. It was tremendous. Everything about the place was OK. But for me, I would be confined to a kitchen, a living room and a bedroom in the apartment, and it's too much money. They have everything in terms of amenities. They're comparable. They have a library, they have dining rooms, they have places to play cards, they have places for shows, everything. The staff and the people that I came in contact with were very good.

Our visit at Sonata in Boca Raton was very good. I like everything in the community, it's just a little too expensive. The staff was very accommodating, they took me on a tour, and they also set up a luncheon. They have a movie theater, which was kind of cool, and they also have a library. It was very nice, but it's a bit smaller, so it's intimate. But then again, it's also more expensive than the other place I have visited.

My mother was a resident of Startford Court of Boca Pointe. The people there were the kindest and most caring people that I've ever met, and the staff was beyond helpful. They actually love the people that they work for and those who live there. I would recommend it to anyone. The room was very spacious, and my mother was able to bring her entire bedroom, which was an armoire, wicker chair, queen-sized bed, a 70-inch dresser, and a night-stand. The living room overlooked the patio, and there were brand-new carpets. They refurbished the whole unit and it offered everything she needed. There was a washer and dryer, a bedroom, and a fully equipped bathroom.

Five Star Premier Residences of Boca Raton was very nice. The apartments were very nice, but you have to bring your own furniture. We had lunch there, which was fine, and the food was adequate. The staff members were very nice and informative. They answered my questions, but the place wasn't as good as others.
According to the Genworth 2018 Cost of Care study, the average monthly cost of assisted living in Boca Raton is considerably lower than both the national average ($4,000) and the state average ($3,500). In fact, in Boca Raton, the average monthly cost of care is among the lowest in the state, with costs in major cities such as Jacksonville ($4,425), Panama ($4,200) and Miami ($3,350) coming in substantially higher.
The type of care needed is the biggest factor contributing to the cost of care, and in cities like Boca Raton, this is especially true. The cost of nursing care in the city is $4,300 higher than that of assisted living. When compared with home care services, assisted living is considerably less expensive, as well. In addition to home care services coming in about $800 higher than assisted living costs, seniors who choose to stay in their home need to budget for additional expenses such as rent and general upkeep, which are typically included in the cost of assisted living. Florida’s Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care Program helps seniors pay for the cost of assisted living services, as well as home care and nursing care, in Boca Raton and throughout the state. In addition to covering the cost of care, this program helps low-income seniors pay for other services including medical and dental care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and transportation services as needed.
To be eligible for Florida’s state Medicaid program, seniors must be 65 years of age or older and willing to submit to a comprehensive care assessment, which is designed to determine their need for long-term care and the level of care they require. The applicant’s individual income must not exceed $16,040, and those applying with a spouse may have a combined income that’s less than $21,599. The number of participants accepted into this program each year is capped, so there is usually a wait list.
Seniors can learn more about the application process by calling 1-800-96-ELDER.
Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly
The Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) is provided by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs. It provides seniors with alternative care options that let them continue living in their home or an assisted living facility once they require a nursing level of care. The program was created to reduce the load on nursing facilities in Boca Raton and throughout Florida.
Seniors who wish to participate in the PACE program must be 55 years of age or older and complete a comprehensive care assessment to determine the level of care they require. They must also be capable of continuing to live safely within their community. The financial requirements of this program are the same as those that are in place for the state Medicaid Managed Care Long Term Care program.
To find a PACE provider in the Boca Raton area, seniors can call 1-855-435-7223.
Optional State Supplement
In most cases, Medicaid and other government financial assistance programs don’t cover the cost of room and board in assisted living facilities, which leaves seniors paying out of pocket for these expenses. Florida’s Optional State Supplement (OSS) benefit can provide some relief in this scenario. The benefit is in place to provide low-income seniors with a monthly cash payment that can be used to pay for room and board costs while living in long-term care homes. The exact amount each senior receives depends on income and needs. The maximum monthly OSS payout in Florida is $78.33.
To receive OSS payments, seniors must be receiving Supplemental Security Income and must not have more than $2,000 in assets, including property. To apply for an OSS benefit, seniors can call ACCESS Florida at 1-866-762-2237.
Elderlife Bridge Loan
Elderlife Financial Services is an independent financial institution specializing in bridge loans for seniors. Those who are ineligible for Medicaid and other government assistance programs may apply for an Elderlife bridge loan, which is paid directly to the applicant’s care facility upon approval. Loans are paid back in monthly installments. Elderlife bridge loans have low interest rates and flexible terms.
While eligibility is dependent on credit history and income, seniors who are unable to qualify alone may apply with up to six cosigners, which may increase the likelihood of approval.
Long-Term Care Insurance
Long-term care insurance typically needs to be purchased before the need for long-term care exists, but for those with the insight to invest in a policy, this type of insurance covers the cost of assisted living and supportive services in an approved long-term care facility. Most plans come with an annual deductible, which needs to be paid by the senior.
Eligibility, monthly costs and deductible amounts vary depending on the provider and plan but are normally determined by the policyholder’s age and health.
Some seniors may be eligible to receive covered medical treatment from their local Veteran Affairs (VA) clinic. For eligibility requirements and information about other services that are available to veterans, seniors can call the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at 1-844-698-2311.
