My mother entered this facility after having been in a larger community. I immediately noticed an improvement in her personal care and hygiene. The staff are very kind to the residents. Plus, it feels more like a home setting and less institutional.

They only clean the rooms once a week the staff is mostly 20 year old kids most of the activities have been taken away the administrator has most of her family working there the food is usually cold and tasteless I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone

Since 428 took over Margate Manor all amenities and service dropped to a One Star. They advertise social activities…. They advertise chauffeured drivers… They advertise on site beauty salon/barber shop…. They advertise gourmet meals with snacks…. They advertise outdoor activities with lakeside view…. All of the above are non existent!!!! Doors are locked to outside near lake, no activities are done outside. They removed the shuttle bus… no drivers to take patients anywhere! Parking lot is full of holes and completely dark at night. No security… anyone can walk into facility at night, the so called medical techs are not at front desk. The thermometer for visitors to be screened for fever, has not worked in 6 months!! Elevator is so old, it smells and is dirty. Techs don’t watch patients take their pills, my Moms pills were often found on floor and under her recliner. I can’t tell you how many meals my Mom didn’t receive if she wasn’t feeling well to go to dining room…. They never brought her food to her.. Dinner was sometimes a cheese sandwich, hot dog with loose potatoe chips, they stopped serving the small bag of chips. They would put loose chips on plate, with no regard to patient’s dietary needs. Low salt was always a problem for my Mom. Then this is how they conserve money, they removed the 5 gal water jugs and hard lined a water line to internal faucets. So my Mom was drinking from the sink water and they once told my Mom to get water from the bathroom sink!!!! How disgusting so I brought her bottled water and that would disappear from her room. I finally had enough and after we received a letter of rent increase and downgraded services, I took my Mom with me with better care!!! No weekly happy hour, no local entertainment or stimulating activities. All the previous staff quit or was fired after long tenures. Keep your parents away from this 1 Star facility….it has become a nightmare!!!

DO NOT move there. They keep jacking UP the RENT there! My mother hasn't lived there long and as soon as she moved in? Her rent started going up. It went up again. She got the notice the other day. Unbelievable!!! They do NOT want you there obviously. They want you to move out. DO NOT MOVE THERE! Outrageous Rent Hikes ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!!!!

The place has no one watching the dementia patients. Theres nothing for them to do. the place is dirty no staff, the rooms need serious cleaning and work done. I would not put a person I dislike in this facility. It is only about the money, not about the patient and that is SAD. Worse mistake ever taking a loved one there. Could not wait till they got out of there.

I chose Jacob\'s tender Loving Care after touring their facility. My mother has severe arthritis in her hips and we could no longer properly care for her. Here\'s why I chose them. I liked that it\'s a small facility with 24/7 nurse and caring staff. It\'s a clean facility, it doesn\'t have that institutionalized smell. We had a private furnished room with closet. All we had to bring were her clothes and personal items. Great food and they made adjustments to suit my mother\'s likes. Very helpful with getting her medications transferred and delivered to her. Liberal visiting hours. They also helped arrange for hospice care. They are easy to work with and answered all our questions and concerns.

Pacifica Senior Living Sunrise was nice. When we went there, they were having renovations so everything was out of place, but the lady who did the tour was very nice, and she was very clear. The location was clean and well organized. If we were thinking of putting my mother into an assisted living, I liked that place for her. It's a very nice place with a good environment. They also had a salon, a library, and lots of activities.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Broward County

Medicaid in Florida

Florida’s Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care Program provides financial assistance for the cost of long-term care to eligible seniors living in assisted living facilities and other residential care facilities in Broward County and throughout the state. The program offers seniors a variety of social assistance services. The senior’s specific needs determine service delivery, but services may include transportation, nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy or speech therapy.

Seniors must be 65 years of age or older and complete a comprehensive care assessment to be eligible for this program. Applicants must also meet Florida Medicaid financial eligibility requirements, which as of 2019 are capped at $16,040 per year for individuals or $21,599 for couples. This program has an enrollment cap, and there’s typically a waiting list for new applicants. Seniors can contact 1-800-96-ELDER to inquire about eligibility or apply for the program.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly

The PACE program provides financial, medical and social assistance to elderly individuals who require a nursing level of care but prefer to continue living in their community. According to the PACE guidelines, program participants may live independently or within an assisted living community. While the program doesn’t provide seniors with additional funds, it does offer its participants subsidized access to medical and social services at drastically reduced rates.

To be eligible, applicants must complete a comprehensive care assessment to determine the necessary level of care. They also must be 55 years of age or older, be able to live safely in their community and meet Medicaid’s financial requirements. Seniors can find a PACE provider in their area by calling 1-855-435-7223.

Elderlife Bridge Loan

Seniors who are unable to access Medicaid but can’t pay for the cost of assisted living on their own can apply for an elder bridge loan from Elderlife Financial Services. Bridge loans are paid directly to the assisted living facility on behalf of the senior and can be paid back in installments, typically monthly payments for the duration of the loan term.

Although eligibility depends on credit and income, seniors can apply with up to six cosigners. Applicants must also be residing in or moving into an approved facility in order to be eligible for a loan.

Optional State Supplement

Supplemental Security Income recipients can apply for OSS, a cash benefit that’s designed to help seniors pay the cost of room and board in assisted living facilities. The OSS benefit is based on the applicant’s income, which must be less than $849.40 monthly, and it has a maximum payout of $78.40 each month.

In addition to monthly income limits, seniors applying for OSS must not possess assets valued at more than $2,000 per individual or $3,000 per couple. Seniors can receive more information about the OSS benefit and submit their application for the program by contacting ACCESS Florida at 1-866-762-2237.

Long-Term Care Insurance

Long-term care insurance policies are available to older adults to help them prepare for the future and the potential that they may one day require long-term care. Companies such as Genworth Financial and Bankers Life offer such policies in Broward County. The cost of long-term care insurance varies from provider to provider and is dependent on several factors such as the policyholder’s age and health, as well as the current average cost of care and the amount and type of coverage purchased.

Eligibility guidelines differ between policies and providers, but generally, people must purchase a long-term care insurance policy before the need for long-term care exists.

Senior and Community Centers in Broward County

Senior centers in Broward County are typically open to seniors age 55 and older and provide a range of services and programs that may include social activities, day trips, congregate meals and classes in computers, fitness, nutrition or finance.
