I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I can not give enough great praises for this facility. My 99 year old mother has been here almost one year, and she loves it. With limited sight and hearing and being in a wheelchair she needs a lot of assistance and receives it without a problem. The food is wonderful and the multitude of activities are well thought out and geared to many specific groups to keep them busy and active. All of the staff is so positive and cheerful. Spills are mopped up without a problem. Upon entering, you will find it spotlessly clean and smelling fresh. I could not ask for a better place.

We visited The Windsor of Ocala. It appeared to be clean and organized. It was not convenient for us to bring our furniture, so that was one of the things that made us decide not to go. The rooms are rather small but adequate. Brenda was very nice and helpful. Their exercise room was extremely small, as I recall.

Brookdale Chambrel Pinecastle was very nice, it's an older community, but it was remodeled. I was very impressed with the staff. I have it on my list of places to go back and see again if my friend's nephew ever gets here. I was very impressed by the marketing person. For the rooms, I saw mostly studios and one-bedrooms. They were very clean, they showed me renovated and not renovated apartments, and I liked the renovated one more. It was very nice. I'm considering it for my friend.

My mother moved into Hampton Manor at Deerwood, and as far as I can tell it is very good. Everybody is kind and friendly. The room is bare and grey. It is what it is, but it is functional, it is available, and we are grateful. The food is delicious; they love the food.

The Windsor of Ocala is above our normal budget and exceeded our insurance coverage, but it's an established community. When I did the tour, the staff was very informative, she answered all our questions, and I had the opportunity to meet a few of the staff members. I saw some of their rooms and they were adequate. Their dining area was well-set up. The whole community is very similar to what the place we chose has.

Marion Oaks Assisted Living was a small facility that only had room for 16 people. It was more like a hospital, it was too small, the rooms were too small, and it wasn't what we were looking for at this time. The place was very clean, the people were very nice, and the staff member who accommodated us was very helpful and very good.

Brentwood at Fore Ranch is clean. My wife's room has a bed, 2 closets, a restroom, and it has a microwave, extra sink and a small refrigerator. The staff members are helpful but they need more people, especially during the afternoons, during holidays or on the weekends. The food is pretty good, they also have a lot of activities for the residents. They have checkers, puzzles, memory games, TV, and exercises, they have a lot of things going on. I'm rating this community a 4 because it needs a little improvement but the facilities they have is nice.

We were able to tour Pacifica Senior Living. It was beautiful, it's brand new, but they do not graduate into Medicaid if needed. It was a little bit higher in price. The rooms were large, the staff was wonderful (very nice), and the dining room was exceptionally nice. They have a community area, a nice library, an outside area that was wonderful, there were lots of plants, and a fountain. The rooms had a lovely bathroom, plenty of closet space, a little extra room here and there depending on where you are, and nice big windows. The residents seemed content and happy, the menu was on the board, and it was very nice. It's just across the street from Walmart. The lady there gave me more information than anywhere we went. She explained her costs, and why they charge what they do, she gave us a complete tour, and she didn't miss a thing. This is a place I would move into. They have a bus that takes them to different places, a complete schedule of different places to go, and they had a nice area where you could fix a cup of coffee anytime.

The number one reason we chose Pacifica Senior Living Ocala for my mom was her finances. The second reason was food and accommodations. The room was a nice and airy large room that's bright. One of the negatives in it was the location because it was farther out from Ocala than what we wanted. It's about 6 to 10 miles from Ocala, it's quite a distance out. I like their staff, the nurse, and the woman who was in charge of sales was very helpful, even the office staff itself like the business manager. Another thing we liked about it is that they're willing to provide transportation for mom to her doctors. The food was good. They had a garden there, it's a place where she could go outside. At her home she loved her backyard, and it has an outside garden there that was very nice. Even though it was backed by stores there were trees, and it looked like it was out in the country. One of the things I really like was the way they handled her death. They called me immediately, they explained that she had been happy the week before, talked to several of her friends on the phone and mixing well with other clients, and she died peacefully in her sleep. They did not push us to have her belongings moved and gave us time to make arrangements. They also helped with the arrangements with the undertaker. She did not get the chance to go on their group outings, but they did offer several different things like lunches and outings. As part of her every day care, she needed pull up incontinent products. When she ran out the staff went and purchased it for her. So they really watched out for and took care of her. I was just really pleased with the staff and the people in general. At one point mom wore compression stockings, and they were helping her put them on in the morning. One of the people that helped her didn't do it quite correctly, so mom took them off. And when I mentioned it to the nurse, she went through retraining with everyone so they would know how to put them on. The only negative I have was that the hallways at times were dim. They had skylights, and I don't know if it was because it's painted darker, but there were no windows other than the skylights into the hallways. So sometimes it was a little dim, although it was lighted. They had activities from 9:00 in the morning until 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon, and they do things like playing poker and other cards.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Ocala

Medicaid in Florida

Medicaid is a nationwide program that provides low-income, low-asset Americans with access to limited health services such as screening for diabetes and management of chronic health conditions. The federal and state governments jointly fund it, and in Florida, the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration administers the Medicaid program.

To qualify for Medicaid coverage, Ocala seniors need to meet strict income and asset limits. For a single senior, the income limit is $2,313 per month, while a couple applying together can earn no more than $4,626. Income from all sources must be declared, including pensions, alimony, stock dividends, wages and annuities.

Medicaid limits countable assets to a maximum of $2,000 for individuals and $3,000 for couples. Assets include cash, bank account balances, bonds, stocks and all real estate except for the applicant’s primary residence as long as that residence has a current market value of $585,000 or less.  Also excluded from countable assets are all personal effects such as clothing, furniture, jewelry and one vehicle.

Seniors aged 65 and over who qualify for Medicaid may be eligible for benefits through the Florida Statewide Medicaid Managed Care, Long Term Care Program, or SMMC LTC. This program funds services designed to delay or prevent nursing home placement by supporting seniors who remain in their own homes or an assisted living facility.

Services covered under the SMMC LTC include home accessibility adaptation, homemakers and attendant care, medication administration, and occupational, physical and speech therapy. It’s important to note that while this program does not cover the room-and-board portion of monthly assisted living costs, it may be used to fund other supports seniors could need to reside in an assisted living facility.

In addition to meeting eligibility requirements for Medicaid coverage, seniors who apply for the SMMC LTC program must also meet one or more of the clinical criteria for program inclusion. The Comprehensive Assessment and Review for Long-Term Care Services (CARES) or the Florida Department of Elder Affairs performs this assessment.

To learn more about Florida Medicaid for seniors and the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care and Long Term Care program, contact the Agency for Health Care Administration at (877) 711-3662 or call the Florida Elder Helpline at (800) 963-5337.

Assisted Living Bridge Loans

Seniors who require access to funds for assisted living on a short-term basis may be eligible for an assisted living bridge loan from Elderlife Financial Services

These loans provide seniors with the cash they need to pay for moving expenses and monthly costs while transitioning from their home to an assisted living facility, making this a viable option for seniors who are selling their home or waiting on benefit approval.

Seniors can make assisted bridge loan applications over the phone, and in most cases, an answer is provided to the applicant within 24 hours. If approved, seniors can access funds through either a lump-sum payment or as a line of credit, and most assisted living loans have terms of 12 months or less.
