My dad just arrived and I cannot express how grateful I am to have been put in contact with Pedro. The situation we found ourselves in contained multiple obstacles placed by those we trusted to help. We felt helpless and close to hopeless. Pedro and his team took control and help us more in 1 week than anyone has in 6 months! We are grateful and cannot Thank Pedro enough for his kindness, compassion and most importantly, for keeping his word!

My father-in-law is in here. There have been a lot of issues with him during the transition, but it is typical. It takes time. The people there are great with communication though from what i can tell. I like the facility, but he hates everything and that is typical because he has only been there 2 weeks. The staff was fantastic, and he is in a studio apartment there. As for the activities, I know that they had some kind of an Easter thing last Friday. Everything looks clean and nice. It did not have any bad odor like you usually get in nursing homes. The people are great from what I can tell. They have a hair salon, a theater room, and a library. They also have a bird sanctuary on the ground and a chapel. They have several different areas set up and places for residents to do things.

I have been a resident of Belleair Towers for 2 weeks now. The community is fine. It's quiet and its clean. It's a 1-bedroom apartment and it's a nice size. They also have studio and 2-room units. The staff was fine and they clean the rooms once a week. I had just gotten out of the hospital, so I'm not familiar with the amenities and activities yet. They set appointments and they have some concerts available. They provide 3 meals a day. You either have it delivered to your room or have it at the dining area.

I visited the Lake House in Largo. It's very nice and very open. There's stuff going on, it's not gloomy, and they have a beautiful place overlooking the lake in the back. You could sit out there on the screened-in porch -- it's not even a porch, it looked like a room. There are activities going on, too. When I was there, they were getting ready to do something. There were probably twelve people there sitting around. They were serving them lemonade.

Royal Palms is a beautiful facility and very up to date. But it was kind of cold, the staff wasn't warm and friendly, and we only saw a few residents. I didn't see that many people, and I didn't see that many smiles like I saw at the other place I toured. The rooms would have had overlooked the huge parking lot; they didn't have a nice view. The building itself was beautiful. The library was very small, and they only had one library.

It was very good. The staff was great. They sat down with us, answered all our questions, and discussed the cost. It was a very informative tour. They showed us both one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, but we were more interested in the two-bedroom, two-bath, and they were nice. They have a lot of activities going on, too, which is very stimulating. They have three libraries, an area to walk outside, walking clubs, exercise clubs, and other activities regularly. When we were there, they were having a Mardi Gras party, but they were still socially distancing. My parents were able to try the food, too, and they said the food was very good.

It is a nice facility. It's a good placement. I think the staff is very friendly and cooperative, so in that regard, it's good. Her room fits her needs. I think it's spacious enough for her. The administrative staff and nursing team is doing an excellent job.

My wife and I are currently at Belleair Towers. The service is adequate for now. They kinda cut back on activities now due to Coronavirus. They're not encouraging group activities but they keep the residents busy. They have a library, a pool, and an exercise area. They don't encourage you to the dining area right now. Most of the meals are delivered to your room, and the food is good. Our room is spacious, clean, and nice. They have housekeeping.

Palm Garden of Clearwater is a very nice place. Everything is very well and seems to be topnotch. I'm not allowed to go in and participate and see what mom's doing, but basically she is in a wheelchair and bedridden. She's non-weight bearing, and they wheel her around to different areas where she can go to the cafeteria and communicate with other people. She doesn't participate in any sort of activities really that I'm aware of. This place was a recommendation of a surgeon in the hospital she went to for her surgery. It was right down the road and they recommended it. My mother seems to enjoy the food. She eats very well, and based on talking to her, she seems to be very pleased with it. The staff members seem to be very good.
Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care survey collects senior care cost data nationwide, and the study shows that assisted living costs in Pinellas County are below the state ($3,500) and national ($4,000) averages. To the south, assisted living costs are higher in North Port ($3,874), Punta Gorda ($3,400) and Cape Coral ($4,000), while costs are lower east of Pinellas County in Sebring ($3,038) and Lakeland ($2,808).
Senior care cost data wasn’t available for Pinellas County, so data for the closest city, Tampa, was used.
Senior care costs are based on the level of care, the number of direct service hours provided and the location. In Pinellas County, monthly nursing home care costs are more than $5,000 higher than assisted living. In-home care from a homemaker ($3,718) or home health aide ($4,096) is also more expensive than assisted living based on 44 hours of direct service weekly. When comparing the true cost of each type of senior care, it’s important to recognize that residential services for seniors include room and board, while in-home service costs are in addition to ongoing living expenses, such as food, utilities and home maintenance.
Medicaid is the nationwide health coverage program for low-income children, adults and seniors who would otherwise be unable to afford health insurance. It’s jointly funded through the federal and state governments, and Florida’s Medicaid is administered through the Agency for Health Care Administration.
To qualify for no-cost Medicaid coverage, seniors 65 and older must earn no more than $2,313 when applying as an individual and own no more than $2,000 in countable assets. Senior couples applying together may earn no more than $4,626 per month and own no more than $3,000 in countable assets.
Under Medicaid rules some assets are exempt, including one vehicle, a non-revocable burial trust, personal belongings and the principle residence of the applicant, valued up to a maximum of $585,000.
Statewide Medicaid Managed Care, Long Term Care Program
The Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care waiver program is designed to reduce nursing home placement rates among Medicaid-eligible seniors. It provides a variety of medical services that support seniors who need nursing home level of care but wish to remain in their homes or an assisted living facility.
In accordance with federal law, all seniors who seek Medicaid-funded home and community-based services must be evaluated by a registered nurse or designated assessor through Florida’s Comprehensive Assessment and Review for Long-Term Care Services program.
If the CARES assessor recommends enrollment in the SMMC-LTC, seniors may be provided with one or more of the following services within an assisted living facility:
For more information about Florida Medicaid and the SMMC LTC program, contact the Florida Elder Helpline at (800) 963-5337.
Optional State Supplementation
Florida seniors who receive Social Security payments and live in an assisted living facility due to age-related mental or physical deterioration may qualify for an SSI cash top up through the Florida Optional State Supplementation program.
OSS provides additional funds for use towards the room-and-board portion of assisted living costs. Eligible seniors may receive a maximum of $78.40 per individual or up to $156.80 per couple.
For more information on Florida OSS, contact ACCESS Florida at (866) 762-2237.
Assisted Living Bridge Loans
Elderlife Financial offers assisted living bridge loans for seniors who need access to cash to facilitate a move into an assisted living facility. Available in terms up to 12 months and with interest-only monthly payments, these loans provide a short-term solution for seniors who are selling their homes or waiting for their benefits to begin paying for their assisted living costs.
Seniors can apply over the phone for free, and in most cases, lenders provide a response to the loan application within 24 hours. For more information, contact Elderlife Financial at (888) 228-4500.
Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly
Pinellas County seniors age 55 and older who are on Medicaid and/or Medicare and need the level of care normally provided in a nursing home may be eligible for the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly. PACE may also be available on a private-pay basis.
PACE provides program participants with comprehensive medical and nonmedical services to help seniors age in place within their community. Seniors may live in their own homes or an assisted living facility.
PACE includes all Medicaid services along with access to an adult day health facility, where seniors can participate in organized recreational programming, congregate meals and restorative therapies, such as physical, occupational or speech therapy. All prescription medications, primary care and medically necessary supplies are provided.
Enrollment in PACE is voluntary; however, seniors who enroll in PACE are automatically excluded from all other Medicaid-funded services to prevent service duplication.
For more information contact Suncoast PACE at (727) 289-0062.
There are numerous senior centers located throughout Pinellas County where adults 50 and older can participate in free and low-cost programs, including art classes, quilters clubs, cribbage and canasta games, and fitness classes geared towards seniors.
