We selected The Arbor at BridgeMill for my mother. They offer a lot of opportunities for seniors to be involved, to meet others, and to call it their new home. The staff has been wonderful. The activities they offer are movies, exercise classes, yoga classes, and water aerobics. They have a gym and a movie theater. They do meet and greet for new members. They do afternoon gatherings with snacks or happy hour. They have music every Thursday in the afternoon. They offer transportation to doctors' appointments, hospital, grocery stores, shopping, and the library. It offers a lot for the seniors living there. My mom is 95 and is in independent living. One of her first comments was, 'Everybody here has a walker,' and she got it. She is on the second floor, and she tries to take the stairs whenever she can. She is active as she can be at 95. She has limited sight and her hearing is compromised, but she takes care of her apartment. She likes to cook a little bit for herself when she doesn't want to go down to the dining hall. She has moved from another state that she has lived in all of her life, so it is an adjustment there. It has been hard, but she is making a real effort. I think they are doing everything they can to make her feel at home. They have two pools: indoor and outdoor.

My mom lived here, and it's a really nice facility. The caregivers are really good and took care of my mom. She had a nice room that's fairly large. It had room for her bed and quite a bit of her furniture. It was well taken care of and in good shape. My mom would go to lunch and supper and she'd eat with the other people, and if she wasn't feeling good, they would bring her meals in her room. The food looked really good and my mom said it tasted good. They'd take the residents on outings and to the mall. The pricing was very reasonable for what my mom got.

It was great, and the price was pretty competitive. The staff didn't seem attentive. The personnel was kind of in a hurry and didn't take the time with us very long. The rooms were pretty good and apartment-like. I've also seen the dining area. The building is newer.

Cameron Hall in Canton was an OK community. The person who assisted me during the tour was extremely helpful and very knowledgeable. They had an exercise facility, a meeting room, a place to watch movies, a library and so on. It's a pretty good place.

Cameron Hall had both assisted care and memory care and they had a nice variety of floor plans available. The staff was very attentive to what I was asking, were very friendly, and very personable. It's very private and the grounds were maintained and well kept. It was very easy to get to. I was impressed with what I saw.

My uncle is in Cameron Hall, and it was very nice. The atmosphere is nice, it's a very clean environment, and the people are very friendly. We're just having issues with the cost. He loves the food there, and the staff is very nice, and friendly. They're very conscientious, very nice, and very caring of their patients.

It had a lodge feel and looked like a ski lodge. It's a small, nice, homey community with 41 people. The staff was very friendly. We observed the people, and they had options with their food. There were tablecloths on the table. It was nicely decorated for Christmas. The rooms were small. They had a lot of activities in the calendar with basic things like exercise, Bible study, jewelry classes, and something to do almost every hour.

The cost of senior care is generally determined by several factors, but the most significant factor is the type of care required. In Cherokee County, the average monthly cost of assisted living is $3,390 per month, nearly half the cost of nursing home care. Assisted living is about $400 less per month than in-home services as well. When considering home care as an alternative to assisted living, it’s important to keep in mind the other expenses involved with living at home, such as rent and utilities, which are generally included in the cost of assisted living. Throughout the U.S., Medicaid provides low-income individuals and families with access to a wide range of health care, including medical treatment, dental care and prescription medication. In Georgia, Medicaid is funded by the state with the support of the federal government. Primarily, its accessed by families with children, pregnant women and senior citizens.
While Georgia’s standard state plan doesn’t cover the cost of long-term care, unless it’s received in a nursing home, the Georgia Community Care Services Program Medical Waiver does provide care and support services to frail elderly individuals who choose to continue living in their home or in an assisted living facility. The waiver was created to decrease expenses for Georgia’s Medicaid system by reducing the number of seniors accessing nursing home care in the state. It does so by providing the services seniors require to delay or avoid further institutionalization. Enrollment for this waiver is capped at 19,000 participants, which means that it’s likely seniors will have to be placed on a waiting list before being granted assistance.
To qualify for Medicaid programs in Georgia as a senior, applicants must be 65 years of age or older and undergo a personal care assessment to determine their level of need. Financially, an individual must have a monthly income of $2,313 or less ($4,626 couple) and may not have countable assets greater than $2,000 ($3,000 couple). Exempt assets include the applicant’s home, household furnishings, personal belongings and a single vehicle.
To apply for Medicaid or inquire about waiting list times for the CCSP waiver, seniors can call (877) 423-4746.
Optional State Supplement
Seniors who receive Supplemental Security Income can receive an additional cash benefit from Georgia’s Optional State Supplement program. This benefit is available to low-income seniors or disabled individuals who receive long term care, whether at home or in a facility. The Optional State Supplement is funded by the state of Georgia with assistance from the federal government.
To qualify for this payment, seniors must be eligible for Medicaid and receive the federal Supplemental Security Income benefit. To apply, seniors can call the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213.
Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS)
The non-Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services program is provided by the Georgia Department of Human Services – Division of Aging with the assistance of the 12 Area Agencies on Aging. Although the HCBS program doesn’t directly pay for assisted living costs, it does help seniors to reduce their out of pocket expenses by providing a variety of services that aren’t covered by Medicaid. Some of the services this program provides include physical fitness classes, transportation services, support groups, nurse visits and nutritional counseling.
This program is available to seniors aged 60 and above and has no financial limitations. Applicants are accepted on a case-by-case basis and preference is given to those with the lowest income. To apply, seniors can call the Atlanta Regional Commission Aging Division at (404) 463-3333.
Elderlife Bridge Loan
Elderlife Financial Services provides short-term loans or a line of credit to seniors who are unable to pay the upfront cost of assisted living or other types of long-term care. The company offers bridge loans at flexible terms and low monthly payments. Upon approval, funds are issued directly to the senior’s care facility and are to be repaid in full by the senior and/or cosigners.
Although eligibility depends on credit and income, seniors can include up to six cosigners on their application to increase their chances of approval. Applications can be submitted online and more information can be obtained by calling (888) 228-4500.
Senior centers offer a variety of programs and activities for individuals aged 55 and older. In Cherokee County’s senior centers, activities include yoga, crafts, shopping trips and magic shows.
