I found Sunrise at Fountain Square to be a very pleasant space. The folks are very engaged. I like that they have a dog, which is sort of a comfort pet. He is a very gentle, large fur ball. It is nice. My mom likes their dog. It is taking my mom some time to adjust, but they are trying for her to meet other people. This is a very comfortable, pleasant place for her to be given that she had to give up the condo she has been living in for 45 years. The other thing that is very important to us is that they have a doctor, an eye doctor, and a podiatrist that predominantly see them. That's very helpful because it is very difficult to get my mom to appointments since she can't walk on her own. Whatever arrangement they have, these physicians come and visit them once or twice a week. They will bill you through your Medicare just like they would have if you go to their office. They're there, and that's huge. We have been happy with it. The food is delicious. My mom is getting a much greater variety than what she had. You get a typical American variety of cuisines and also beer and wine. She likes that they have a glass of wine with the food. They have an enormous amount of activities, but my mom has not taken full advantage of that yet. This is certainly not the cheapest or the most expensive, but it is a very nice place for what they charge.

My aunt moved into Lexington Square of Lombard. They have everything. She went to Lexington rehab from the hospital for 20 days and then she got to go to Lexington Square for a trial period. They did some screening test on her and they have identified some Alzheimer's. She just turned 93, so it's hard to move these people anyplace. In another year she may need memory care, so the best thing was to put her in memory care right from the start. Every floor is different. Assisted living is one floor, which was a drawback because we had to make a decision. We didn't want to pick something and then have to change it in eight months. It would be hard for her. They give you a trial room for 30 days and so she went there with their furniture. She fit in, but she had some issues, and then they suggested memory care because she required a little more care. They have another building for their public assistance or for people that are on aid. That's a whole different program, and their rooms are different. They have three different buildings there, and each building is independent, but they're all together. She did get a 1-bedroom in memory care. She enjoys the food. Their activities aren't as strong as some of the other places, but she just likes watching TV, so we don't need those. The staff is very good. The facility is a little bit outdated, but she likes it. I took her to exercisie. She doesn't need anything more than that.
According to the Genworth 2018 Cost of Care survey, Lombard is among the more affordable cities in Illinois for assisted living. On average, this type of care costs about $180 less here than in the state as a whole and $150 less than in the rest of the nation.
Of the cities surveyed, Lombard is the third-most cost-effective for assisted living. Lower monthly rates may be found in the Champaign area, where care costs an average of $3,578, and Peoria, where rates are $100 less per month at $3,750. The most expensive city is Rockford, which lies about 75 miles to the northwest, where assisted living costs an average of $4,770 per month.
Note: Senior care cost data is not available for Lombard, so data for the Chicago area, the nearest major region, was used.

The cost of senior care depends largely on the level of care provided. In most cases, more comprehensive care that includes living expenses costs more, while care that is provided on a daily or hourly basis and doesn’t cover living expenses costs less. The most expensive types of senior care in Lombard are nursing home care and assisted living, which cost $7,330 and $4,794, respectively. With both of these senior care types, the monthly cost generally includes room and board, meals, housekeeping, laundry services and personal care. In-home health care costs a little less than assisted living at $4,576 per month. This assumes 44 hours of care per week at an hourly rate of $24. The least expensive type of care in Lombard is adult day health care, which costs an average of $80 per day or $1,728 per month. Neither in-home care nor adult day health services include monthly living expenses such as utilities, meals and rent.

Low-income seniors aged 65 and over may qualify for free or low-cost health insurance through Illinois Medicaid. This program covers a variety of services, including doctor visits, hospital stays and some types of long-term care. While regular Medicaid doesn’t cover assisted living, seniors may receive services through the state’s Medicaid waiver program, which is outlined below.
To qualify for Illinois Medicaid and its waiver programs, single applicants can have a monthly income of no more than $1,041 and no more than $2,000 in countable assets. Married applicants can have a monthly income of up to $1,409 per month and up to $3,000 in countable assets. If only one spouse is applying for coverage, the other spouse’s income and assets are not counted.
In addition to the regular Medicaid program, which covers nursing home and in-home care, Illinois has a Medicaid waiver program that provides coverage for assisted living.
The Supportive Living program is for seniors who require a nursing home level of care but wish to remain in an assisted living facility. Seniors in this program receive services such as intermittent nursing, assistance with the activities of daily living, medication management, meals and 24-hour security.
Illinois Medicaid is an entitlement program, meaning that all who qualify are guaranteed to receive services. However, the waiver programs have limited funding, so eligible seniors applying for the Supportive Living program may be placed on a waiting list until services are available.
For more information or to apply for Illinois Medicaid, Lombard seniors can visit the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services website or call (800) 226-0768.
Optional State Supplement
Lombard seniors who receive Supplemental Security Income are eligible to receive the Optional State Supplement. This cash benefit can be used toward assisted living expenses not covered by Medicaid, including room and board. The OSS amount that an individual receives depends on the state-approved allowances for individual needs.
To be eligible for OSS, seniors can have a monthly income of up to $771 and up to $2,000 in countable assets. Married couples may have a monthly income of up to $1,157 and $3,000 in countable assets. Additionally, their income maintenance needs, which are based on the state’s standards, must exceed their monthly income, including their SSI benefit.
To apply for OSS, applicants can visit the Illinois Department of Human Services website or call (630) 407-6500.
Elderlife Bridge Loan
Seniors who are transitioning to assisted living but are experiencing a gap in funding may apply to receive an Elderlife bridge loan. This loan, which is the only one of its kind, can be used to cover upfront fees associated with moving into an assisted living facility until more permanent financial arrangements are in place. There are no application fees, and funds may be sent directly to the assisted living facility in as little as 24 hours. Funds may be taken out in a lump sum or as a line for credit, and interest-only payments are available.
To qualify for this bridge loan, applicants must be able to show how they will repay the loan, such as with the money from a home sale, financial asset liquidation or long-term care insurance. Loan approval may also be dependent on the applicant’s credit history.
To apply for an assisted living bridge loan, seniors should apply online or contact Elderlife Financial Services at (888) 228-4500.
The nearest Veterans Affairs service office is the Veterans Assistance of DuPage County, which provides financial assistance to Lombard veterans, including help with prescription drugs, VA medical transportation and survivor and burial assistance.
