Worked at this facility for about two months. The staff is not focused, and argumentive. The buildings are old and need loads of restoration. The training was unprofessional. Facility unkept. I caught scabies wihich was very traumatizing. Please do your research before choosing to place a loved one here or considering employment.

The apartments at Sunrise of Severna Park were very nice, and everything is modernly equipped. The staff was very pleasant and the grounds were really nice. They're located right across the street from a community center, right next door to a public library, and within walking distance from restaurants. The rooms I saw had brand-new appliances, granite countertops, and it was very clean. They have various sizes to choose from and I felt that their 1-bedroom is a big room for a 1-bedroom apartment. The environment is very peaceful and calm. I thought their pricing was expensive, but I wasn't surprised because Severna Park is a very expensive area.

Morningside House of Friendship was a nice place. It seemed fine, but not as homey. The sales person who show ueds around was good and very informative. The dining area looked pleasant. When we were there, a performer was singing, playing the guitar, and entertaining the residents in a living room area. They were enjoying it.

We were less enamored with Brightview Severna Park than other facilities. The attitude of the staff was kind of condescending and negative. We looked at their independent living and saw both a studio and a 1-bedroom. The studio was small, but the 1-bedroom was adequate.

My dad moved into Sunrise of Annapolis in February. It is very nice and convenient and has all of the services he needed. However, it is pricey. The staff members are very helpful and very conscientious. They provide medication management, laundry, and housekeeping. They also help him with bathing, dressing, and transfering from his wheelchair to his chair to his bed. They serve three meals a day. From what I have seen, the food is very good. There are lots of male residents right now, so they try to cater some of the activities specifically to them. They have church services, hot shaves, movie nights, and different outings.

My parents are living in Regency Park. They both like it, and we're very fortunate that we were able to get them there. Regency Park is very nice, very pleasant, very clean, and close by. They have an open area and a very homey atmosphere, not at all like a hospital arrangement. It's very cozy. My parents' room is very nice, a nice size, and easy to furnish. They provide TV service, cable, and phone. The food is very good.

We chose Morningside House of Friendship because of the availability and ratings. The environment and the people suit my parents better, and they're adapting well. They're on a dementia floor, the amenities are good, and they have activities several times a day. All the staff that we talked to and the management are very good and have been here for several years; there are very few short-term staff members. They have nursing every day of the week, and the food is fine. Some of their activities are religious, including Bible study, poetry, Bingo, movie nights, and things like that. Their activities director is very good so they have at least eight activities a day.

We checked out Sunrise of Severna Park. The place was wonderful. I see no negatives at all about it. It's just the cost was way out of my father-in-law's price range. The staff was very nice and very friendly. The dining area looked very nice. They had a food bar and all kinds of things set up in their cafeteria. We got a list of things they do and from what I could tell, they do a lot of activities. They take people out to places on their buses. They offer transportation. The location was very good, and it's very easy to get to. The food looked good, smelled good, and looked healthy. It's a very clean place.

My brother is in Glen Burnie Health and Rehabilitation Center. It's fine, but it's old and needs some work. The care is what is most important though. The majority of the staff is wonderful. They have a good attitude. They all know my brother and they care about him. I see they're very good with the other residents too. The food is decent and good. However, because the place is so old, I would give it a three. Also, I don't see a lot of activities there.

Care Cost Comparison
Many factors impact the cost of long-term care, but few are so significant as the type of care seniors need. Nursing home care, which provides the most comprehensive assistance, is usually most expensive. In Anne Arundel County, the cost of a semiprivate nursing home room ($9,733) is over double the cost of a room in an assisted living facility ($4,250). In-home care ($4,004) is slightly less expensive than assisted living, but this care option comes with additional costs. When seniors move into an assisted living facility, their monthly payments usually cover their utilities and meals. For seniors who choose to remain at home, the cost of in-home care is an addition to their current monthly budget. Cost of Homemaker/Home Health Aide Comparison Chart

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Anne Arundel County
Medicaid in Maryland
In Anne Arundel County, low-income residents can receive medical assistance via Maryland’s Medicaid program. This low-cost health care plan covers basic medical needs such as doctor visits, hospital and emergency services and prescription drugs. Other benefits include dental and denture services, diabetes care, hospice care, laboratory and X-ray services, medical equipment and supplies, physical therapy, mental health treatment and transportation services. The program does not traditionally cover the costs of assisted living services, however. Seniors may have to apply to a Maryland waiver program to receive this type of coverage.
To receive Medicaid coverage in Anne Arundel County, seniors over the age of 65 must meet specific eligibility requirements. They must be a resident of the state of Maryland, and they must have U.S. citizenship or an approved immigration status. Traditionally, immigrants must lawfully reside in the country for five years before they are eligible for Medicaid. These requirements are sometimes waived in emergency medical situations, however, and seniors who want more information about immigration status eligibility should contact the Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services.
Seniors must also meet specific income guidelines. In Maryland, income requirements for applicants over the age of 65 are determined on a local rather than statewide basis. Nonetheless, seniors can use the state requirements as a barometer of eligibility. In Maryland, individuals cannot have an income that exceeds $16,612, and two-person households cannot have earnings higher than $22,490. If seniors are already receiving Supplemental Security Income, they are automatically eligible for Medicaid.
To apply for Medicaid, Maryland seniors can use the myDHR online healthcare portal, download the DHR application or visit the nearest department of social services.
After acceptance into the Medicaid program, seniors receive an insurance card in the mail within two weeks. Seniors must also select a managed care organization, which provides all of the state’s Medicaid health care services. While all the programs offer the same basic benefits, the individual plans do vary slightly.
Anne Arundel County seniors can choose from Aetna Better Health of Maryland, AMERIGROUP Community Care, Maryland Physicians Care, Kaiser Permanente, MedStar Family Choice and Jai Medical Systems. If seniors do not select an MCO during the application process, they can change their assigned MCO up to 90 days after enrollment.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
Home and Community-Based Options Waiver
In Maryland, the Home and Community-Based Options Waiver can help seniors fund the costs of assisted living facilities. This program provides community-based services and support structures to eligible seniors, allowing them to live in their own home or in an approved assisted living environment. Besides funding assisted living, the waiver offers services such as behavioral consultation, dietitian and nutrition services, case management, medical day care and family training.
Seniors must meet specific health and income guidelines to qualify for the waiver. They must require a nursing home level of care, which is determined via a uniform medical assessment. To be eligible for the waiver, seniors must not have an income exceeding 300 percent of SSI benefits or countable assets exceeding $2,500.
Once enrolled, seniors must select a Supports Planning Agency, which helps seniors develop a long-term plan of care and coordinates their waiver services. Seniors can review their services history and plans via the MyLTSS interactive online tool.
Increased Community Services
Seniors currently living in nursing homes may be eligible for the Increased Community Services program, which helps seniors transition from nursing homes to community-based environments such as assisted living facilities. To qualify for this program, seniors must have documentation showing that they have lived in a nursing home for at least 90 days.
The ICS program is for seniors who don’t meet the income requirements of the Home and Community-Based Options Waiver. If accepted into the program, seniors automatically qualify for Medicaid benefits.
