I visited this facility

The rooms at Lakeside Assisted Living were clean. The place was very modern, clean, and secure. We liked the staff, who were very pleasant and knowledgeable about the community. We liked the fact that it's close to the local park. We tested some of their food and talked to some of the people who gave us their feedback. We looked at several of the rooms, including a single and two-bedrooms that were a nice size. I liked the way they're split up into individual little sections, so you don't feel like you're in one big room with a bed in it. It's everything we're looking for. The place was great.

We're very pleased with Harrison Senior Living - John B. Parsons Community. They're very caring and conscientious. It's a lovely home and my mom has a lovely room. We're very happy with the care she's getting. They do arts and crafts, music programs, and physical therapy.

Lakeside Assisted Living was very nice. The person who assisted me during the tour was perfect. There was no problem. It was very good. The memory care section has their own dining area upstairs and it was fine. I was there on a Sunday and there were a lot of people at the church service. They had good staff, and it's a well-kept facility. However, they turned my parents down because their care level was too high, which did not make me very happy at all. They want people that are lower care level. I rate it very high because it's very beautiful and they're very nice and everything is perfect, but they don't want you if you have a high care level. My mom is 96 and they don't want that.

Lakeside Assisted Living was very nice, and I liked it. However, it was not in our price range. The staff was wonderful. The food they offered was good, and the kitchen was open at all times. It was very clean, and housekeeping was pretty good inside and outside. They had physical therapy, transportation to go shopping, and an area for music with a small piano.

I visited this facility

It had very friendly staff, and it's a very good community. The day we toured, they had a magic show going on, and the magician was pulling rabbits out of a hat; it was pretty neat. We were also introduced to one of the activity coordinators, and there was a calendar with probably 200 activities through the course of 30 days. There was a little library, and all the books are donated from various places. I also noticed later on that day that there were volunteers from high schools who did nails and toenails. The staff was good, and if anything, they're what won me over. That day, we were given an option of either salmon, filet mignon, or lobster tails, and it was really good. It was amazing.

Lakeside Assisted Living was nice, and I enjoyed the tour we had. The food was excellent, and the dining area was very clean and very appeasing to the eye. The staff was very nice, very informative, and met us as soon as we walked in. They had a beauty and barber shop.

We had a nice, interesting visit. It’s small but nice and quiet. We were evaluating the living part of it and saw the cottages. The staff was excellent. There was transportation available.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Salisbury

Medicaid in Maryland

In Maryland, Medicaid may be available to individuals of all ages if they meet certain financial criteria and other requirements. Residents enrolled in Medicaid are eligible to receive a variety of free and minimal-cost health care services including:

  • Doctor and hospital visits
  • Emergency services
  • Laboratory services
  • Physical therapy
  • Mental health treatment
  • Transportation services
  • Hospice care
  • Long-term care in a nursing home

Seniors who receive Medicare and Supplemental Security Income and are over 65 years old or disabled are entitled to receive Medicaid.

Because eligibility requirements can vary for residents aged 65 and older, it’s recommended that Salisbury seniors apply for Medicaid through their local Wicomico County Department of Human Services office at (410) 713-3900. However, they can also apply online or by printing, completing and mailing a paper application to the following address:
Wicomico County DSS
201 Baptist St., Ste 27
Salisbury, MD 21801

Seniors aged 65 and older seeking long-term care who wish to live at home or in an assisted living community rather than a nursing home may be eligible for care through a Long-Term Services and Supports waiver.

Home and Community-Based Options Waiver

Through the Community Options waiver, Salisbury seniors who need assistance with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing and eating, may qualify for the following services:

  • Assisted living
  • Personal assistance
  • Case management and transition services
  • Nutritionist and dietitian services
  • Doctor and hospital visits
  • Mental health care
  • Prescription drugs
  • Laboratory services
  • Home delivered meals
  • Medical equipment and assistive technology

To be eligible for waiver services, a senior must:

  • Require a nursing home level of care
  • Not earn more than 300% of the SSI benefit rate ($2,313 monthly)
  • Not have assets exceeding $2,000 or $2,500 (depending on the eligibility category), and exempt assets include one’s home, primary vehicle and furnishings

Because this waiver is not an entitlement, eligible seniors may be placed on a waiting list. Interested seniors should call the Maryland Access Point at (844) 627-5465 to learn more.

Increased Community Services Program

Similar to the Community Options waiver, the Increased Community Services program provides health care services and assistance with activities of daily living to seniors who live in a nursing home but would like to transition back into the community. This program allows individuals whose income is too high to qualify for the Community Options waiver to enroll by paying income in excess of 300% of SSI benefits toward their care costs. Participants must also have assets below the $2,000 or $2,500 maximum limits (depending on their eligibility category).

Benefits of ICS are nearly identical to services provided through the Community Options waiver.

In addition to meeting the above financial criteria, seniors must:

  • Be living in a nursing home and have lived there for at least three months with at least 30 days having been eligible for Medicaid
  • Have care needs that, when served in the community, cost no more than in a nursing facility
  • Not be eligible for any other Medicaid waiver

Salisbury seniors interested in this program should call the Maryland Access Point at (844) 627-5465.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Optional State Supplementation

Salisbury seniors who are eligible for SSI payments, are at least 65 years old or blind or disabled and live in an assisted living facility may receive a state supplementation of $184 per month in addition to their federal assistance. This amount includes an $82 allowance for personal needs.

To qualify for SSI, individuals can earn no more than the federal benefit rate of $771 per month, and married couples can earn no more than $1,157. Assets, which exclude one’s home, primary vehicle and personal belongings, may not exceed $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a married couple.

Interested individuals should call (800) 772-1213 or complete the online disability benefits form to apply.

Senior Assisted Living Group Home Subsidy

In Maryland, a state subsidy of up to $650 per month is available to help certain seniors who would otherwise live in a nursing home afford to live in a small assisted living group home for four to 16 residents.

To qualify for this subsidy, seniors must:

  • Be at least 62 years old
  • Require assistance with activities of daily living
  • Live in or be approved for residence in a facility partnered with the area agency on aging
  • Earn no more than 60% of Maryland’s median income
  • Have assets totaling no more than $11,000 (individual) or $14,000 (married couple)

Wicomico County seniors interested in finding a home that accepts this subsidy should call their local Maryland Access Point office at (410) 742-0505.
