Farmington Hills Inn seems pretty nice and is good about covering all of my dad's basic needs. The people are pretty friendly and helpful. Some studio rooms have their own bathrooms, but some have shared bathrooms, and there's no kitchen, which isn't a problem for us. They have little get-togethers and group activities, as well as field trips and outings. They have a salon, in-house healthcare workers, and visiting physicians.

Farmington Hills Inn was clean. It didn't stink or smell of urine like most places. It was modern and had a lot of nice things that they can do, like crafts, TV rooms, and a lot of young people who help out there. I liked the staff members. They seemed very nice. It could be a place that I wouldn't mind putting my dad in. The rooms were two-bedrooms or private rooms. They had available rooms when I was there. They were a nice size. You can have your bed, TV, and closets. They had a shared bathroom with the other person. I liked everything. They had a TV room and crafts and things to do. People came over from the library with books. The staff was very thorough, very nice, and explained everything. I enjoyed the tour. The structure was fine. They had a room for people who needed to be enclosed and regular rooms for people who didn't have to be. It was nice. They had very nice and helpful staff.

My father is in Brookdale Farmington Hills. He's in a one-bedroom apartment. They don't have too many activities. I attended a sing-along and they have exercises. They have a library, they use one of their cafeteria spaces for exercise, and they have buses. The staff was not that great. The place is kind of dated and dark. You're not getting what you pay for.

It was nice and clean. The people were very friendly and nice. I liked it because everything was just on one floor, and they have very large studio apartments. They invited me and my mom for lunch and the food was good. I liked it because it felt intimate. It had a convenience store, a beauty salon, and a library.

My sister lived at Botsford Commons. It was excellent and the care was great. I have nothing bad to say about it. I liked the dining area. Everybody eats there and orders like in a restaurant. My sister played bingo and they had a tricycle car show, which she enjoyed. The rooms were good, nice, and spacious. I liked that they had telephones by the bed for each person. The only negative is you couldn't get telephone cell service and Wi-Fi was hard to get. The staff was great and attentive. You don't need to wait three or four hours for someone change you when you're wet.

Farmington Hills Inn included everything a person needed to be able to transition to a higher level of care. The people are awesome. The décor was a little outdated, but the place was clean and smelled very clean. It wasn't the most updated place, but they discussed plans for updating. They seemed to have things very organized, and it was a nice calm atmosphere. It felt more like family-friendly place. It didn't seem like a lot of people there were just working; instead, they seemed genuinely happy to be there.

Brookdale Farmington Hills was very clean and updated. The community was very welcoming. They had quite a few activities listed. The place was very well kept and homey. I liked the way it looked on the inside, and the screened-in porch was nice. They didn't offer WanderGuard, so if someone was walking or wandering off, nobody would ever know.

My dad moved into Brookdale Farmington Hills, and so far, it's been good. We haven't really had any problems. The apartment is beautiful and clean, and maintenance is right there. There is only one aide on duty at night for around 20 rooms, so they need to increase the aides.

I visited Farmington Hills. It didn't get a warm, comfortable feeling, and I didn't like the smell because it smelled like a nursing home. They had a lot of activities and had opening day for the Detroit Tigers. The staff was nice.
In the Detroit suburb of Farmington Hills, seniors pay an average of $4,224 per month for assisted living, reveals Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care study. While this is only slightly more expensive than the U.S. average, it is nearly $400 more than the statewide average. However, compared to other cities in southeast Michigan, such as Ann Arbor ($5,050) and Monroe ($4,720), Farmington Hills is quite affordable. The central Michigan city of Saginaw is home to the most affordable assisted living facilities in the state, at just $2,825 per month.

The monthly cost of long-term care varies depending on the type of care a senior requires. Seniors who receive adult day health services can expect to pay an average of $1,517 per month, which is about one-third the cost of assisted living. At $9,095 monthly, nursing homes are more than twice the price of assisted living facilities. Nursing homes are even more expensive for seniors who choose to stay in private rooms, at $10,798 per month. Homemaker services ($4,433) and home health aides ($4,528) are only slightly more expensive than assisted living facilities. Seniors who are interested in these in-home services should remember that these prices include only the care itself. Seniors are responsible for all their regular monthly expenses, such as rent, groceries and home maintenance, so remaining at home may be significantly more expensive than assisted living.

Created in 1965, Medicaid is a joint federal-state program that provides health care services to low-income people across the United States. More than 65 million people receive health care coverage through Medicaid, and over 2 million of them are in Michigan. Michigan’s Medicaid program covers many necessary medical services, including:
Optional State Supplementation
Farmington Hills seniors who receive SSI may be eligible to receive an additional monthly cash payment from the Michigan government. Seniors can use this top-up funding toward their room and board costs.
Single seniors who live in a home for the aged can receive a maximum monthly OSS payment of $179.30. Couples may receive as much as $695.60. The benefit amount that seniors receive varies depending on their income.
To learn more about this monthly cash assistance, contact the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213.
Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly
The Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly offers comprehensive health care services to seniors who require nursing home care but would prefer to live somewhere else. Seniors who participate in this program undergo an individual needs assessment and receive a care plan. The PACE program then delivers all their necessary medical services.
All Medicare- and Medicaid-covered services must be included in PACE programs, and additional services may be included if necessary. Some of the services that seniors may receive through PACE include acute care services, hospital services and personal care services.
Seniors may qualify for the PACE program if they are 55 or older and able to live safely within the community. They also need to qualify for Medicaid and not currently participate in the MI Choice waiver. Seniors who are enrolled in a Health Maintenance Organization are also not eligible for PACE.
For more information about PACE, Farmington Hills seniors can contact PACE Southeast Michigan at (855) 445-4554.
Long-Term Care Insurance
Seniors who do not need assisted living care yet but think they might in the future may want to consider long-term care insurance. This type of insurance provides coverage for long-term care facilities, such as assisted living facilities and nursing homes. In Michigan, many insurance companies are authorized to sell long-term care insurance policies.
Seniors who apply for long-term care insurance can expect to answer detailed questions about their health. The premiums for this insurance vary depending on a senior’s health status. Insurance companies may decide to exclude or limit coverage for preexisting conditions, and they may even refuse coverage for some seniors.
The Michigan Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program provides free counseling about senior health insurance. Seniors who have questions about long-term care insurance can call the MMAP at (800) 803-7174.
The Adults 50 & Better program hosts daily events at the city’s community center. The center’s many fitness classes include pickleball, yoga, line dancing and tai chi. Seniors can also participate in a variety of courses and events such as knitting classes, buffet dinners and presentations by guest speakers. While some activities are free, many have a small fee.
