While this is only slightly more expensive than the U.S. average, it is nearly $400 more than the statewide average. However, compared to other cities in southeast Michigan, such as Ann Arbor ($5,050) and Monroe ($4,720), Farmington Hills is quite affordable. The central Michigan city of Saginaw is home to the most affordable assisted living facilities in the state, at just $2,825 per month.

The monthly cost of long-term care varies depending on the type of care a senior requires. Seniors who receive adult day health services can expect to pay an average of $1,517 per month, which is about one-third the cost of assisted living. At $9,095 monthly, nursing homes are more than twice the price of assisted living facilities. Nursing homes are even more expensive for seniors who choose to stay in private rooms, at $10,798 per month. Homemaker services ($4,433) and home health aides ($4,528) are only slightly more expensive than assisted living facilities. Created in 1965, Medicaid is a joint federal-state program that provides health care services to low-income people across the United States. More than 65 million people receive health care coverage through Medicaid, and over 2 million of them are in Michigan. Michigan’s Medicaid program covers many necessary medical services, including:

In Michigan, seniors who receive federal Supplemental Security Income payments are automatically eligible for Medicaid. Other Michigan residents may qualify if they:

• Earn less than $16,612 before tax annually ($22,491 for couples)
• Have countable assets of less than $2,000 ($3,000 for couples)

MI Choice Waiver Program

The MI Choice waiver program, often called “the waiver,” may help Farmington Hills seniors pay for assisted living services. While the waiver does not contribute to room and board costs, it may pay for some of the services provided in a home for the aged. Some of the waiver services that can be provided in these homes (also known as assisted living facilities) include:

• Community transportation
• Counseling
• Specialized medical equipment

Seniors can apply if they meet the waiver’s eligibility requirements. The income and resource requirements are the same as regular Medicaid. Optional State Supplementation

The Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly offers comprehensive health care services to seniors who require nursing home care but would prefer to live somewhere else. Seniors who participate in this program undergo an individual needs assessment and receive a care plan. The PACE program then delivers all their necessary medical services.

All Medicare- and Medicaid-covered services must be included in PACE programs, and additional services may be included if necessary. Some of the services that seniors may receive through PACE include acute care services, hospital services and personal care services.

Seniors may qualify for the PACE program if they are 55 or older and able to live safely within the community. They also need to qualify for Medicaid and not currently participate in the MI Choice waiver. Seniors who are enrolled in a Health Maintenance Organization are also not eligible for PACE.

Long-Term Care Insurance
