I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Mom ended up with stage 4 bed sore Urinary tract infection dehydration Patients here are not taken care of You have to be on top of aids to do their job some are friendly some could give a crap about your love one Most spent time around nurses station laughing doing nothing I had to remind constantly to shower my mom Weeks would go by no shower Probably because they knew mom had bad sores and they didn’t want to shower her Sores in feet turned out very infected Mom not doing well infection in her body Now in hospice Staff need to be trained let nurses know how bad sores are so they can alert doctors and hopefully treated on time Food sometimes left on trays untouched Meaning they weren’t fed Patients should be positioned especially if being in bed all the time Check on your love ones I should have moved my mom soon when I noticed so much going on

My mother has been a resident of Sunrise a few years now. We looked into a lot of facilities. The price of care facilities can be high but I found sunrise to be the most economical of the quality facilities. The price is reasonable a d the service is excellent. I would encourage anyone looking for a facility for their love ones to consider Sunrise

I visited this facility

I saw the one bedroom at Benchmark Senior Living at Putnam Farm. The size and the layout were perfect. I think it would suit my mother's needs perfectly. It was clean and no sterile smell or institutional smell at all. I saw the dining room and the country kitchen where people can go in and have little cooking demonstrations or make something themselves if they want to. I saw indoor and outdoor sitting areas, a computer area where people can learn how to use computers if they want, and a little beauty parlor. It was great. The staff was very friendly, from the reception that I got when I arrived, to the tour that I got. Everybody was wonderful.

I am a current client of this provider

We got Comfort Keepers of Montclair & Hasbrouck Heights for my mom. So far my mother hasn't had any complaints, and she has had positive responses. They provide breakfast and lunch, they take her outside, they keep her company, do her laundry, and make sure she takes her meds.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My brother is now in Stratford Manor. He had to go into quarantine for 14 days even though he did not have the virus. I came to visit him this past Friday. They only will allow you a 15-minute visit due to the fact that they have other visitors and because of the way the visiting is set up; it's one-on-one and you are outside the whole time. There is only one visitor at a time for each family. The only thing is the visit should be at least for 20 minutes to a half hour; 15 minutes to me sounds almost like a penal institution. The upkeep and cleanliness of the place is very good. Also my brother is clean, and the staff is professional. My brother was very disoriented when he went into the hospital. After about two weeks the social worker suggested that he needed to be someplace where he could get rehabilitation because his walking was totally off. The thing I didn't appreciate on behalf of the hospital, and also on behalf of Stratford Manor, is that they should have told me right then and there that he needed clothing. He had been there in quarantine for 14 days, and no one really reached out to me to say he needed clothing. I found that to be a lack of communication between the hospital and Stratford Manor. There shouldn't have been an oversight like that.

I visited this facility

I went to Benchmark Senior Living at Putnam Farm. It appeared to be well kept and clean. The staff was polite and courteous, and the apartment was nice and fine. They gave us a calendar of activities. We saw the dining area, but we didn't see a lot of people there, and it didn't have that something extra to convince us that "this is it."

I visited this facility

Brookdale West Orange was pleasant, but they need to level up a little bit and update the outside and the inside. They have a lot of activities, and they seem to care about their clients. They have field trips and things of that nature, and they have a hair salon. The rooms were standard and seemed pretty clean. The lady who gave me the tour was excellent.

Located in East Orange, NJ, an impressive, beautiful building named Park Crescent stands up with a huge parking lot and a backyard for the relatives of patients, The quality of care provided is very satisfying. The staff is always smiling, never stops asking \"Hi, how are you?\" Excellent food, good house keeping. A place everyone must visit!

I love the staff at Park Crescent Healthcare. They took good care of me. If I ever have to go back to a nursing home for rehab, I would return to Park Crescent

Care Cost Comparison

The cost of senior care is based upon a number of factors, particularly location and the degree of care offered. In Essex County, assisted living costs 50% more than either homemaker or home health aide services. These services, while less costly, don’t include living expenses such as rent, utilities, property taxes and home upkeep, so it’s important to factor these into the overall cost of remaining at home. A semiprivate room in a nursing home, which requires a greater level of care, is almost 50% higher than assisted living and twice as expensive as homemaker services.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Essex County

Medicaid in New Jersey

Medicaid, a national and state-funded system of health care, provides health coverage and services for low-income Americans of any age. In New Jersey, Medicaid is overseen by the Medical Assistance and Health Services division of the NJ Department of Human Services, and it’s administered through NJ FamilyCare Aged Blind and Disabled Programs.

Seniors who wish to receive Medicaid must meet certain eligibility requirements. In addition to being a U.S. citizen and New Jersey resident, single applicants must show a monthly income of $1,041 or less and assets of $4,000 or less. Medicaid considers all sources of income, including wages, bank accounts, cash, investments, pensions and SSI. For married couples with one spouse applying, the only income considered is that of the applicant. According to the American Council on Aging, nonapplicant spouses are entitled to monthly incomes ranging from $2,057.50 to $3,160.50 to ensure sufficient income on which to live.

In addition to all sources of income, investments and any real estate other than the applicant’s primary residence are considered assets. Personal belongings, such as jewelry, household furnishings, an automobile and burial trusts, are exempt.

If seniors are eligible for Supplemental Security Income, they automatically qualify for the Aged, Blind and Disabled program. Monthly income limits for SSI are lower than requirements for Medicaid, at $781.25 for individuals and $1,150.36 for couples, with assets at $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for couples.

Long Term Care Services and Supports

For seniors wishing to live within their communities in assisted living or within their homes, LTSS may be available. Income and asset limits are slightly higher for individuals seeking LTSS, at $2,250 and $2,000. Evaluations for eligibility are administered through two agencies: The local County Welfare Agency conducts the financial review, and the Division of Aging Services conducts the clinical assessment. Applicants must require assistance with at least three or more activities of daily living, such as bathing, grooming and dressing.

For more information about New Jersey Medicaid or LTSS, visit the NJ FamilyCare Aged Blind and Disabled Programs page to complete an application online or call (800) 356-1561. Applications may also be printed and brought to the local Essex County Welfare Agency.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Assisted Living Bridge Loans

Those needing short-term funds to help facilitate a move to assisted living may qualify for an Elderlife Financial Services bridge loan. Available as either a line of credit or lump sum payment, these loans have 12-month terms and are easily applied for. Applications can be taken over the phone, and funds are normally available within 24 hours. To learn more about assisted living bridge loans, contact Elderlife Financial at (800) 228-4500.

Veterans Aid and Attendance and Housebound Benefits

New Jersey veterans who need help with daily tasks or who are housebound may qualify for Aid and Attendance or Housebound VA benefits. There are many different ADLs, and a veteran does not necessarily need to require aid with all of them to qualify for this top-up program. Dressing, bathing, preparing food, transportation and medical management are some of the rudimentary ADLs. Those with disabilities who are bedridden are also considered eligible for A&A, as are applicants who reside in nursing homes.

Veterans who have a permanent disability that confines them to their homes may qualify for Housebound benefits. It is important to note that even if applicants meet the criteria for both Housebound and A&A, they may only receive benefits from one program. To apply or learn more, veterans should contact the Newark Regional Veteran Office at (800) 827-1000.
