My mother moved into Lake Arlington. They're just bought out now by Morada, and they are amazing. The staff is also amazing. When we first moved her in, we said, "Hey, this closet is broken." In 2 minutes, they were there to fix it. They're friendly and accommodating. The people there are just amazing, and her neighbors are awesome. They have a lot of stuff, but because of COVID, they aren't really doing much right now. They have a theater, an activities room, a laundromat, and all that is included, you don't pay extra for any of that. Her apartment is clean and beautiful. It's just wonderful. If I could live there, I would.

I'm at Town Village Crossing. I'm in the independent living, but they are moving assisted living people in here now. I was in before COVID, so I know what it was like, and I was thoroughly enjoying it. It felt like it's very well run, they were responsive, and they kept so many activities going, but then COVID came and everybody had to deal with it. In the first four months, we totally shut down. We had our meals served in our home, we didn't have any activities going on, and no family were allowed in. They were letting chronic caregivers come in, and some of those are family of course, but we are still being fed well, and there are people caring for us. I had a fall, and I wound up having surgery. I was in my room and they were checking on me, and that's not even a part of their plan. We don't have a nurse on staff or anything, but I love this place, and I still love it. The facility is beautiful, and it's a wonderful place to live.

Cleaning each week, great. Meal deliveries, 3x a day. Activities, games, crafts if desired. Miscellaneous activities, church on Sundays, laundry of towels, sheets if desired. They just work very hard for us. We are quarantined right now because of a tested person. I don't know who that is. So they're delivering all our meals, they're delivering our mails and snacks. We just stay to ourselves, no one can come in except for medical personnel. And that's what happens, and we had to do it early, early on and it worked out. Hopefully this will all work out, too. This is home. This is home for us. We like our home.

I was impressed with Arlington Plaza. The staff did everything and answered any questions I had. They were very knowledgeable about the home. The apartment they showed me would be enough to have a two-bedroom, a breakfast area, and a living area. They also have a patio. The layout was real good. It was cozy when you walked in there. It's nice and clean, and it gives you that home away from home feeling, which I'm looking for.

My friend is here, and it's just a wonderful place for him. He's enjoying all the activities. It's very friendly, inclusive, and full of activities. He's busy every day. He's enjoying the people and the place. He loves the food. The staff is very responsive and pleasant. It's working out very well for us.

We toured for my mother-in-law, she really liked it, and it's very personal, smaller, and intimate. The staff member did a great job and knew the residents. I was impressed with how well they knew the residents, their personal relationship with the residents, and involvement with the community. We saw the dining area, which is central to the community. You walked across to get to one of the wings. It's open, but we did not try the meal. They had a beauty shop, an area for TV watching, a library, and open concept. They only had a bike and treadmill, and it was out on the balcony, overlooking the dining room.

Town Village Crossing is a nice friendly place. They're well kept, the residents are very friendly and the food is good. I like it here. They have laundry facilities very near and also a maid comes twice a month and the trash bin is right around the corner. They have services on Sunday morning, a sing-along on Sunday night, quite a number of entertainers come in from time to time, and quite a lot of activities like bingo and board games. I have a one-bedroom and it's fairly nice sized.

I like the care that my mother has received at Meadowbrook Memory Care Community. The staff is very attentive, and anything that we had concerns about were addressed immediately. My mom enjoys it there, she gets along well with everyone, and she's comfortable. She participates in everything like the floral class, they ride-along to museums, do chair volleyball games, bingo, you name it. They also have sing-alongs, community birthday parties every month, and the individual's family also celebrates their birthday. A beautician comes in and does their hair, they do their nails every week, they don't have a pool, but they take the residents on walks. They always keep them active. I've tasted the food, which looks and smells good, my mom is a good eater, and hasn't had any complaints about it.

My wife is not really satisfied with Arbrook Plaza. She would like to move her brother somewhere else. She has had some issues with the staff and it wasn't clean like it should've been. He's partially blind and she had some issues with them helping him move around. Sometimes, his room is not as clean as it should be, and he said the meals are not always hot. I don't think he's getting the value for the price he pays.

While costs of senior services tend to vary widely by type, expenses for most care services in Arlington tend to cluster around the midrange. A semiprivate room in a nursing home has the highest average monthly cost at $5,064, and only adult day health is significantly lower in cost than the other services, at $1,408 per month. Individuals who are looking into senior services should factor in living expenses such as rent, meals and upkeep when comparing the costs of in-home services to residential facilities as these costs are often incorporated into assisted living expenses. Seniors receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or who are in need of long-term care may qualify to receive medical benefits through Texas Medicaid or Medicaid buy-in programs. Benefits include coverage for doctor’s visits, hospital care, prescription drugs, lab work and X-rays, as well as vision, hearing and dental care. Most Texas Medicaid services are delivered through managed care organizations.
Individuals receiving SSI are eligible for the state’s Medicaid program. Medicaid may even help qualified individuals pay for care received up to three months prior to the start of SSI. For more information, interested individuals can visit YourTexasBenefits.
Medicaid for long-term care is available to low-income Texas residents over the age of 65 who demonstrate the need for 30 or more days of nonstop, long-term care. In order to qualify, applicants must not own or be paying off items over a designated value. This does not include houses, vehicles, burial funds and some types of life insurance. To determine if your income and assets fall within the acceptable range, visit the state’s screening tool.
The state’s Medicaid buy-in program was designed to provide medical coverage for working individuals who have physical, mental, intellectual or developmental disabilities. Applicants must not live full time in a nursing facility, state hospital or a care home for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Qualified applicants can buy into Medicaid services for a monthly cost.
For further information, and to apply, potential applicants can visit YourTexasBenefits.com.
The Texas Community Care for the Aged/Disabled (CCAD) program
Overseen by Texas Health and Human Services, the CCAD program allows low-income seniors at risk of nursing home placement to receive personal services at home or in an assisted living residence. It also covers services, such as personal emergency response systems, which reduce the need for constant individualized care. Other available services include consumer-managed personal attendant services, which allows an individual to choose their own caregiver, even paying family members to care for them. Residential care is offered to individuals already residing in assisted living facilities.
While benefits vary depending on an individual’s living arrangement, certain standard eligibility requirements apply. Applicants must be legal Texas residents with income not exceeding three times the Supplemental Security Income payment. Assets must not exceed $5,000 for individuals and $6,000 for couples, although this amount may vary depending on the benefit sought. Applicants should also not be eligible for identical services through Medicaid programs.
Seniors should contact their local Aging and Disability Resource Center for further information and to apply.
VA Aid and Attendance Program
Eligible veterans and surviving spouses in need of financial aid for assisted living can seek assistance through the VA Aid and Attendance Program. In order to qualify, applicants must be over 65 and require help with activities of daily living. Program funding is designed to offset the costs of assisted living.
Application to the program can be confusing since the eligibility requirements are complex and factor in unreimbursed medical expenses. Potential applicants should visit their local VA benefits office for further information or to apply.
Assisted Living Bridge Loans
Individuals or families in need of short-term funding for assisted living may want to consider a bridge loan, which can fund up to 12 months of payments. While interest can be high on bridge loans, this program may be ideal for seniors awaiting benefit approval or funds from a home sale. Bridge loans can also cover the initial expenses of assisted living, including move-in costs.
Because a single loan can have multiple co-borrowers, the importance of individual creditworthiness diminishes, improving chances of approval. Since family members generally apply for bridge loans rather than the senior himself, the age and health of the service recipient don’t impact the odds of approval. Lenders generally require specifics about the anticipated source of permanent funding.
Bridge loans can be disbursed as a lump sum or as a line of credit. Once a loan application is submitted, the approval time is often very fast. For further information on assisted living bridge loans, contact Elderlife Financial Services.
