I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My father is at Argent Court Bastrop, and he likes it a lot, but they may not be adequate to continue his care if he needs more care than he does now. He loves it, it’s a smaller community, and it’s a great facility. His room is a perfect size for him, and the bathroom is really well done in as far as handicap accessible. The food is amazing, the chefs are very good, they treat the residents well, and really cater to their needs. They have dominoes, various parties, bingo, and days out. He doesn’t participate in many activities with other people, but the options are there. There’s always an activity almost daily, a lot of church services, and singers. The dining area is really nice, and they have small tables.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I was impressed with Argent Court Bastrop. It was lunchtime and I talked with different people in the dining room. I got high reviews from everybody except for the food. My parents are there now. It's very nice, they're very caring, and it's very homey. They don't have a dementia program there. My stepmother is benefiting more than my dad, but they're caring for my dad on top of everything else and making sure that they get their meds, and if they don't go to the dining room to eat, that they get their food in their room. I've seen them clean the room and do the laundry, and I'm very pleased. The food looked good, but some people just don't like it. They cater to people with diabetes and 90% of the desserts are sugar free. The only thing they can't do is they can't force them to do anything. If they don't want a specific item that's on the plate, they have an alternative option. It's an older building, but it's well kept. They have several activities for them. They have puzzles, dominoes, cards, and singing groups. They have something going on quite regularly. The pricing is really high, but overall good considering what they do for the clients. I'm not happy with the price, but I'm happy with everything else.

Assisted Living Costs in Bastrop

Seniors in Bastrop pay the highest rates for assisted living in Texas at $5,190 per month. As the 2018 Genworth Cost of Care study shows, this is substantially more than the national ($4,000) and state ($3,795) averages.

The closest rates paid in cities in this area of Texas are $4,370 in Victoria and $4,053 in Killeen, which are much lower than the cost in Bastrop. The high price here is even more noticeable in comparison to San Antonio ($3,975) and Waco, where the average monthly cost is just $3,695.

Note: Cost data for senior care in Bastrop wasn’t available, so data for the nearby Austin area was used instead.

The Cost of Assisted Living in Surrounding Areas

Care Cost Comparison

In contrast to most other areas of the state and country, the average costs for different senior care options are surprisingly consistent in Bastrop. Nursing home care only costs $133 more per month than assisted living, which is understandable since both provide housing, meals and staff on duty 24/7. The monthly prices for in-home care provided by homemakers and home health aides average about $1,000 less than assisted living, but these rates only reflect the hours of care provided. The true costs are likely much closer if household operating expenses are factored in for a closer comparison to assisted living room and board. The much lower rates for adult day health services are the exception, but they only include a few hours of services on weekdays in a group care center.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Bastrop

Medicaid in Texas

The Medicaid program is a jointly funded initiative of the federal and state governments that provides vital health care coverage to economically vulnerable Americans, including parents with young children, pregnant women, blind and disabled adults and seniors.

Close to 4.5 million residents of Texas receive health care services through the state Medicaid program, and 23% of enrollees are elderly or disabled. Texas Medicaid covers a range of services through managed care plans for those who meet the programs’ eligibility requirements. Depending on the plan an applicant qualifies for, the benefits they receive can include doctor and specialist visits, inpatient and outpatient hospital care, emergency medical services, lab work and X-rays, transportation to medical appointments, prescription medications and long-term care services.

To qualify for long-term care through the state Medicaid program, Bastrop residents must be aged 65 or older or have a disability that persists for one year or longer. Applicants also must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents or legal aliens and meet income and resource limits of:

  • $2,313 or less in monthly income for individuals and $4,626 for married couples applying together
  • $2,000 or less in countable resources for single people and $3,000 for couples if both spouses apply

Medicaid counts income from all sources when determining eligibility. Some resources are disregarded, including a primary home, one car, personal effects, household furnishings and irrevocable burial trusts.

Low-income seniors and disabled adults approved for Supplemental Security Income benefits through the Social Security Administration are automatically enrolled in Medicaid and don’t need to file a separate application.

Residents of Bastrop can apply for Medicaid online or call the Your Texas Benefits helpline at (877) 541-7905 to receive assistance with completing an application.

STAR+PLUS Waiver Program

Texas Medicaid offers the STAR+PLUS waiver program as an alternative to institutional nursing home admission for seniors and disabled adults who wish to stay in the community. The STAR+PLUS program delivers integrated medical and long-term supportive services through a participant’s choice of state-approved managed care providers.

For those who qualify, the waiver program provides all the medical services covered under the state Medicaid plan, along with care coordination and supportive services such as:

  • Assisted living care
  • Assistance with personal care and activities of daily living
  • Nursing services
  • Transitional aid to relocate from a nursing facility
  • Occupational and physical therapies
  • Medical supplies and adaptive aids

To qualify for the STAR+PLUS program, Bastrop residents must need a nursing facility level of care and meet the various eligibility requirements for Medicaid coverage. Applicants also must meet one of several program-specific conditions, such as being an SSI benefit recipient or receiving Medicaid while living in a nursing home.

For more information about the STAR+PLUS waiver program or to apply, seniors and disabled adults in Bastrop can contact the Capital Area Agency on Aging at (512) 916-6062.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Optional State Supplementation

Bastrop seniors and disabled adults who receive SSI benefits can also qualify for a monthly stipend from the state to help pay the room-and-board portion of assisted living fees. The Texas Optional State Supplementation program provides an extra $60 per month for those living in an intermediate care facility.

To learn more or apply for SSI and Texas OSS benefits, Bastrop residents can contact the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213.

Community Care for the Aged and Disabled

Those who need assistance to keep living in the community and avoid admission to a nursing home may qualify for the Community Care for the Aged and Disabled program. This federally funded, non-Medicaid program provides specific supportive services based on an applicant’s living arrangement. In an assisted living setting, the program covers around-the-clock supervision and assistance with activities of daily living. It’s important to note that seniors receiving CCAD benefits are responsible for paying room-and-board charges to their care facility, which aren’t covered by the program.

To qualify for CCAD benefits, applicants can’t be already receiving similar services through Medicaid and must:

  • Be residents of Texas and aged 18 or older
  • Be functionally impaired or disabled and require daily assistance
  • Have a monthly income of less than 300% of the current federal benefit rate, which equates to $2,313 for single people and $4,626 for married couples
  • Have no more than $5,000 in assets if single and $6,000 if married

For more information about the CCAD program or to apply, Bastrop seniors should contact the Capital Area Aging and Disability Resource Center at (855) 937-2372.
