I’ve been a resident about a year and would not recommend this place. Bank left, no pool, gym is bad, lots of roaches because of people who don’t clean up after themselves. Some days there is no hot water and if the power flickers b/c of a storm there is no A/C.

Our tour at Dogwood Terrace was fine. The people were nice, and they had what we needed. The staff members who accommodated us were very friendly, and they answered anything that needed to be answered. The room had a small living room and a bedroom. They also had a suite available, which was one room with a bathroom, and there was a one-bedroom, too. They feed them three meals a day, they help them to doctors appointments, and they have activities daily.

My brother did not meet the criteria for Sunrise of Richmond because they cater to older residents. It's a beautiful facility, but it's not right for him. We know many people that were there. It's very pricy though. The staff during the visit was wonderful and explained what they could offer. Everybody looked happy, and it was very clean.

I've been here for about a month and so far everything has been excellent. The staff is friendly and helpful. The area is quiet. I'm very much satisfied and pleased with everything so far. The apartment itself is very basic as far as some of the amenities can be improved, like there's no electric plug in the bathroom which was a little bit disappointing. There's no fan in the bathroom and kitchen. The calendar of activities seems excellent and there are a lot of things going on.

I have been in a lot of these places because of family members. My mom was in here for a short while. Christine and the staff make you feel at home. The workers are very kind to you and really care about you and your family. Very Very nice. Thanks for taking good care of my mom.

I did visit. The facilities were very nice. The amenities were very nice. However, I didn't like it because it was multiple stories; I would not like to live on the fourth or fifth floor. It was a nice place, but I didn't particularly like going up and down the elevator.

The building is attractive and staff very polite and friendly. Some residents skip meals because service is extremely slow. The food could be less sweet and salty and often meat is tough. There are plenty of activities but they could have more outreach visits to apartments to help newer residents and those who forget get to classes and find hairdresser and cafe. A bulletin board by the dining room with clear photos of staff with names and job titles would help.

We're happy with their care and the surroundings. It's a very nice facility. The staff is very nice and very pleasant. Mom enjoys all of them. They're very nice to her and take good care of her. Her apartment is clean and well kept. When I come in, the trash is gone and it's been swept up. It's in good shape. I have seen some of the meals that she has had and they looked very appetizing. She said they taste good. I've seen her do music therapy exercises and sing-along. She's also doing physical therapy right now. She had her hair done there one time, and they painted her nails. They provide entertainment to keep the residents engaged.

Senior care costs in Henrico County vary significantly depending on the type of care, the specific services offered and where care is received. Nursing homes that provide 24-hour skilled care and services, such as medication management, cost about $3,000 more than assisted living, which is also provided in a residential setting. Homemaker and home health aide services cost about $1,000 per month less than assisted living. When the value of assisted living room and board is factored in, this price gap with in-home care becomes noticeably narrow.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Henrico County
Medicaid in Virginia
Medicaid is the federal and state-funded program that ensures basic health care coverage to low-income Americans of all ages. This joint initiative is administered at the state level according to federal guidelines. In Virginia, the Department of Medical Assistance Services administers the program, which provides medical and long-term care services to about one million eligible state residents.
To qualify for Medical Assistance coverage for long-term care services, Henrico County residents must:
- Be U.S. citizens or legal aliens
- Have a monthly income of $2,313 or less per individual whether married or single
- Have no more than $2,000 in countable assets per person
MA counts income from all sources when determining eligibility. Assets that count include cash, bank account balances, stocks and bonds, retirement accounts and real estate other than an occupied primary home. Additional exempt assets include household and personal effects, one automobile and irrevocable burial trusts.
Virginia Medical Assistance provides some leeway on the above limits for a married applicant whose spouse isn’t applying for coverage. An individual who’s over the income and asset thresholds may be able to qualify after spousal living and resource allowances are made, which can be up to $3,160.50 in monthly income and $126,420 in jointly held assets.
Seniors can apply for Virginia Medical Assistance online, by calling (855) 242-8282 or in person at one of the two Social Services offices located in Henrico.

Long-Term Care Insurance
Seniors who are planning ahead for a future move to assisted living may be interested in purchasing a long-term care insurance policy to help cover the associated costs. The coverage provided as well as the requirements and limitations of an LTC policy can vary between insurance companies, so it’s wise to shop around and ask questions before making a choice. The Virginia Bureau of Insurance sets standards for LTC policies offered in the state, such as built-in inflation protection, rules regarding preexisting condition coverage, a 30-day free-look provision and numerous others. Seniors can expect to provide details of their health history when applying, which may affect coverage availability and premium costs.
