A Country Place was the perfect place for our dad. It Is a friendly, home-like atmosphere on a beautiful 5-acre property, with fruit groves and barnyard animals. My dad was very fond of the animals, especially the baby peacocks and liked watching them grow. Rob and Nancy are the owner operators. Rob pays attention to every detail and is incredibly helpful to both the residents and the family. The staff is amazing, food great and fun events are available. A Country Place has our highest recommendation – it is a great, friendly, safe place who will watch over your loved one and keep you informed. Thank you.

I visit my aunt regularly at Habana Health Care Center. I don't know if I like it too much. I think I'm going to be calling them soon because I want to know if she's had the Corona shot. I also want to know if she's still in a ward with 4 other women, I don't think she should be. She used to be in a semi-private with just one more person. I think they transferred her because they said it's better for her depression but I have not talked to them about it. We just visit her from the outside but once every other week, I call to see how her health is and to check everything. I don't like her room. The last time I went in, it didn't have a phone or a way to call her directly. Most places have phones patients can pick up and talk to their family. Here, you have to call a nurse and the nurse has to take the phone in the room for them. I got to talk to the social worker about that because one of the CNAs told me to talk to the social worker about it but when you call her, she's never available or called me back. She's been getting treatments for arthritis and I see it in her medical report that they seem to be doing everything they can for her. I would not rate the facility very high, it needs some improvement. They've improved a lot these past 2 years that I've been dealing with them but before, they were very poor. The staff members that talk to me are very nice. The CNAs, I don't know if they have real RNs there or not, they've always been very nice. The bad thing about that place is they only have 2 elevators so if they ever have a fire in that place, I don't know how to get those people that can't walk out of there. Half of the time the elevators don't even work properly and they're small. Those things could be improved, I'm sure. Other than that, the food and the care seem to be adequate.

The people that I met during my visit at The Colonnade at Carrollwood were great. The staff was very pleasant, very welcoming, and very caring. The rooms that I saw seemed very comfortable and welcoming. I'm really looking forward to being a patient there.

I was very impressed with Palm Terrace Assisted Living Facility & Adult Day Care Center. It seemed to have a number of amenities, activities for men and women, and there were a number of places where they could go out and sit in the garden. It's really attractive, and if I have my choice, that's where I want my friend to move. The building itself was very well kept.

I like Elmcroft of Carrollwood. I like that it is donut shaped, so if my mother walks and gets lost, she ends up in the same spot. It's small, and she can go out in the courtyard without going out to the street. They have activities throughout the day. The staff helps me out and answers all our questions. She has a little bedroom, a little living room, and a bathroom and you can get a wheelchair in it. The shower is small with a seat. They go shopping, they made projects for Easter, and they're having children come over. They have somebody come in and sing every Friday. They have a library, a beauty parlor, and they do laundry separately, so it's not mixed up and lost. They have a fancy dining room with tablecloths. She is getting physical therapy and occupational therapy, and she has cable TV, which is pretty cheap. It's a great place. The food is sometimes great, sometimes mediocre. They have an ice cream machine, and they can get juice and coffee anytime. The activities director is great. They run specials all the time. There's a fee to get in the place, but they can work with you on that. I was very grateful for the admissions director helping me out.

My mother and I loved Brookdale Northdale, but it was too expensive. They had assisted living and memory care. It was very big, but it was only one floor. They had a chef and the meals were absolutely delicious. The flavor of the food was like a 5-star restaurant, and the dining room was amazing. They had tablecloths and flowers on the table. The studio apartment and the bathrooms were big. The place was very nice. I didn't talk to any staff, but I saw them helping the residents, pushing wheelchairs, and walking with them. They had physical therapy and a room for that.

Everything at Brookdale Carrollwood was good, and they're wonderful and very kind people. From the moment I arrived, they had my name on a board. They showed me everything and it was very nice. I was very pleased. The sample room I saw was very nice. They had poker and games.

I visited Brookdale Carrollwood, and it was outstanding. When you enter, it's very clean and calm. They had nice flooring, of either laminates or tiles. Another thing I like is that it was all on one floor. It didn't look like a hotel but more like a home or apartments. The staff was friendly, they were smiling, and the residents seemed to be happy there. When we went there they just had an activity and they had snacks, so they offered us snacks. If you want to go to assisted living, you might want to live there. The staff members were really nice, they were informative. They also made suggestions and followed up, then told us that if things change we're welcome to come back. We were also introduced to other people and staff, and also to care providers, and I was really impressed. The snacks we had were quite good. They showed us the menu and there seemed be quite a nice selection. If you couldn't come, they would give you a choice if you decide to eat in your apartment or room. They had a nice outside area, so there were places to sit, walk or take your wheelchair. If the families came, they have a private dining room or they could sit outside and have a picnic.

I was very impressed with Brookdale Carrollwood. I met with their IT person because I still work from home and at the time, I was thinking if I did go there, I want to stay working, so they made sure that I spoke to everybody that I would need to in order to make a decision. I toured the place and I was amazed at how clean it was and the residents there were happy which impressed me. They were playing Bingo and you can tell that they enjoy the place. They were smiling and happy. The staff was just amazing and you can tell they worked in a team environment and they worked together and not "That's not my job". Their goal was to make the residents happy. I was interested in the big studio which was as big as an apartment, and everything was handicap-accessible which was important to me. The admissions lady was just personable. She really encouraged me and she's very nice. The food was very impressive too, and it was evident that they made homecooked meals, but they were also conscious to make sure that you got the proper vegetable and things that you should have as far as meals.

Care Cost Comparison
The type of care required is the biggest factor influencing the average cost of long term care, and this is especially true in Tampa. The cost of nursing home care in the city is more than $5,000 higher than that of assisted living. When compared to home care services, assisted living is substantially less as well. When considering home care as an option, it’s important to also account for additional expenses such as rent and general upkeep, which add a great deal to the monthly budget and can result in a cost that’s much higher than assisted living, which typically includes room-and-board costs. Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Tampa
Medicaid in Florida
The Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care Program in Florida is available to seniors living in assisted living and other long-term care facilities in Tampa and throughout the state. The program provides financial assistance with the cost of assisted living and other care services to eligible seniors as well as other services that may include transportation, physical therapy, occupational therapy or case management, depending on the specific needs of the senior.
In order to be eligible for this program, seniors must be 65 years of age or older and complete a comprehensive care assessment to determine their need for long-term care. Financial eligibility requirements are in place for this program as well. Seniors must not have an annual income that exceeds $16,040 when applying as an individual, while for couples, income must not exceed $21,599. There is usually a waiting list for this program because it accepts a limited number of participants each year. Seniors can learn more about adding their names to the waiting list and the application process by calling 1-800-96-ELDER.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly
The Florida Department of Elder Affairs provides the Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly. It offers alternative care to seniors who require a nursing level of care but prefer to continue living in their home or within an assisted living community. The program doesn’t provide seniors with cash benefits but instead offers subsidies on medical and social services, including daily nurse or caregiver visits, medical and dental care, transportation services and long-term care.
Applicants to PACE must complete a comprehensive care assessment and be 55 years of age or older. They must also be able to safely live in their community and meet the financial requirements of the state Medicaid plan. To find a PACE provider in Tampa, seniors can call 1-855-435-7223.
Optional State Supplement
Seniors who receive Supplemental Security Income can apply for an optional state supplement if additional financial assistance is required to pay for the cost of room and board in an assisted living facility. The applicant’s current income and budget determine the benefit amount, which has a maximum payout of $78.40 per month.
In order to be eligible for the OSS, seniors must have an income that doesn’t exceed $849.40 per month and may not possess more than $2,000 value in assets. Seniors can apply for the supplement by contacting ACCESS Florida at 1-866-762-2237.
Elderlife Bridge Loan
Seniors who aren’t eligible for government assistance may be able to apply for an elder bridge loan from Elderlife Financial Services. These loans are for seniors living in approved assisted living or long-term care facilities and are paid directly to the facility where the senior resides. Loans are paid back in monthly installments and have low interest rates and flexible terms.
Eligibility depends on the senior’s credit history and income, but for those who are unable to afford the monthly payments on their own, Elderlife Financial Services allows applicants to include up to six cosigners on their application, which may also improve the likelihood of approval.
Long-Term Care Insurance
Some seniors may have purchased a long-term care insurance policy prior to making the decision to move to an assisted living facility. Those who are covered are generally subject to an annual deductible, after which their policy covers the cost of care.
Eligibility and premiums vary depending on the provider, the plan and the amount of coverage, but typically a policy must be purchased before the need for long-term care exists.
