I went to Brookdale Mandeville. Their room looks more like a dorm room rather than an apartment. The place is very clean. Even though it is older, they do their renovations on a regular basis. It is very nice. We didn't meet that many staff members, but I was hoping to meet more people while we were there. They had all kinds of activities going on. They were doing bingo, and people were walking their dogs. They had a room full of books if you want to read and a room where you could go, sit down and watch TV without all the other stuff, they had a place to go sit and eat with everybody, so that you have the socialization.

Brookdale Mandeville's staff was very friendly. The place is nice, and something I would consider if I needed it. The rooms were nice and I liked it. The girl who showed us around was very friendly. They have an arts and crafts area and an outdoor patio where the residents can sit outdoors. They offer three meals a day. They give people their medicine and help them with day to day routines. The place could use a little updating.

The people at The Windsor were very friendly and pleasant to be around. They were my kind of people. I think they were one of the best around.

Dad is living in Brookdale Mandeville. They need to be more cautious. Like with housekeeping, they washed and dried his phone and they lost his glasses. I have to stay on top of them a lot. They don't bathe him if I don't go over there and check on it. For the first ten days, they didn't even bathe him until I said something. I'm paying a lot, and I feel like I should get a better service than what we're receiving. My dad was in there twice. It's got good things, but it also got bad things. The staff has gotten a little bit better. They do well with the activities. They had a little olympic day and my dad participated in that. He just started participating because I push him to get out. However, he doesn't play Bingo, cards, or watching TV in the family room.

We absolutely loved Brookdale Mandeville, but the deal breaker was that no pets are allowed. The dining room looked like a fine restaurant, which made the residents feel like they weren’t shuffled into a cafeteria. The residents were walking around, we got to talk to them, and they were extremely happy with the place. People greeted us as we were walking around. The place itself was beautiful, it was like walking into a very nice hotel with nice furniture and fresh air, and everything was clean.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Mandeville, LA
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one's stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those who need long-term care will have to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid:Medicaid covers most of the cost of living expenses in a skilled nursing facility for qualifying seniors. Care and room and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras such as specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility requirements are strict and complex, so not all seniors qualify for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren't available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about local financial assistance programs for seniors.
