My brother stayed at Brookdale Durham. It's a beautiful building with a beautiful and very comfortable entrance. The only thing that I could complain about would be the cleaning staff, which was very limited for the amount of people in that building. There should have been more cleaning staff, and I think they only got the rooms cleaned once a week, which was not good for me because older people make messes. The staff was very hospitable and approachable. I had no complaints with the staff. They had great activities, musicians coming in, pianists playing, beautiful music, and they loved bingo and puzzles. It was a well planned out facility. They had ample food there, great meals, and nice menus.

I drove up from Wilmington on Monday morning Nov. 2 to visit a friend. Due to Covid, we had to meet outside and it was cold. He was clean, happy and dressed warmly. The lady who assisted us was friendly, helpful, patient, and professional, even though we were a little late. Before Covid, I would visit him several times per year. I always had a good impression of the quality of his care and the general attitude of the caregivers that I met. Although no place is perfect, I think you do a good job considering the challenges you are faced with daily. Thank you for taking good care of my friend. (Some of the categories above, I have no direct knowledge of.)

Durham Regent was good. The staff was marvelous. The rooms were good, not spacious, but adequate. They have a lot of activities and a library. The food was very good.

We liked Durham Regent a lot, but the price is just not where we want it to be. The place was fantastic. The staff was wonderful and friendly. Aaron was wonderful; I liked her a lot, and she caught on quick on how it works with my sister and I. We toured there a long time, so she had things to do and she kept coming back to check in on us. The rooms at first kind of threw me off, but then it makes sense. I would have liked the fridge to be bigger. She showed us some rooms that were V-shaped. I didn't care for the one-bedroom apartment, even though it had a door. It seemed smaller but costs more. The lunch was great, and I like the fact that everybody was coming together, friendly, and talking to each other. The food was wonderful, and we didn't know that we could ask for something. I really like the gaming area with the puzzle tables setup. If you're walking past, you can add a piece and not really have to focus on just that one thing. Other people were playing cards and board games. It's like a library with other things to do, and you're not forced to do anything. I felt good about it because it's an assisted community to a point, so your independence won't be taken away from you. Another thing I thought that's fantastic is the housekeeping. Once a week someone would come in and clean and bring your paper products for you. It was nice. I like that they'll take you places you need to go, and it's included in the price. We've looked at other places, and everything is extra. So the fact that this community has their own equipment to take you to the store, or to the bank and something like that, is a plus. The place didn't have a smell; it was very clean and very inviting. Everybody was wonderful, but a whole lot of praise goes to Aaron.

My experience at Brookdale Durham was good. They have a craft room, TV, movies, and they socially get together. They were in the middle of having their carpets steam-cleaned, so it was kind of a mess that day.

This place is really a dirty and chaotic place, my dad is here and he is miserable. Staff here are just plain mean and rude to him and other residents. I have heard them yell and make fun of residents. Mock them!! Rooms are filthy and smelly and the food is so disguesting and looks like dog chow. My dad is always wet when we visit and his sheets are stained with urine and feces. This place should be closed down.

My grandma is here and she hates it, she is always dirty and wet when we visit and we have to bathe her. Staff are so rude to her and other patients, nurses be on cell phones and cursing at residents. Her food is always cold as ice and looks like slop when she gets it, so we have to go get her hot food and feed her.

My mom was very happy at Durham Regent. She liked the food and made good friends. It's an older community, but the administrator was awesome. The housekeeping was oOK. My mom was there for 16 months and she was satisfied there. It needed updating and probably new hall carpeting. Mom says the food is awesome and she loved everything they served her. The staff was very friendly and changed maintenance several times, but they seemed to be fairly good.

Brookdale Durham was really nice. The rooms were clean and nice. I highly recommend it if people are able to afford it. It is close to VA and Duke Hospital, and Durham Regional Hospital. The staff was really good.

Nursing home care ($7,224) is twice as expensive as assisted living ($3,150), and homemaker services and home health aides cost approximately $1000 more per month than assisted living. NC Medicaid is a public insurance program that provides health coverage for low-income adults, pregnant women, children, elderly adults and other eligible Americans. States are required to provide certain mandatory benefits to Medicaid recipients, such as physician services, inpatient and outpatient hospital services and prescriptions, and Medicaid may opt to provide additional benefits, including nursing home care, personal care and medical equipment.
Seniors in Durham may be eligible for Medicaid if they meet certain financial income and asset requirements. For single seniors, the monthly income limit is $1,012 with assets valued at no more than $2,000, while couples are limited to an income of $1,372 per month and $3,000 in assets. Resources don’t include a senior’s home, car, home furnishings or other necessary items, but it does include cash, bank accounts, stocks and other similar assets.
The state’s Medicaid Deductible plan may help seniors who don’t meet these financial requirements but do have high medical costs. Seniors pay for their own health care costs until they meet their deductible, then Medicaid kicks in.
Seniors who are interested in Medicaid coverage can apply through the North Carolina ePass online portal. They can also choose to complete a paper application and take or mail it to:
Durham County Department of Social Services
414 E Main St, Durham, NC 27701.
Seniors who need help applying for Medicaid or have questions can call (800) 662-7030.
North Carolina’s Personal Care Services (PCS) program may cover hands-on personal care for seniors who live in assisted living facilities. This program is considered an entitlement since it’s offered under North Carolina’s Medicaid State Plan, and the need for assistance is determined by an independent medical assessment performed by the Division of Medical Assistance (DMA). To be eligible for support through the PCS program, seniors must need help with three activities of daily living (ADLs), which are defined as eating, dressing, bathing, toileting and mobility. Alternately, seniors who need assistance with only two ADLs may qualify if their need is extensive.
To apply for the PCS program, fax a paper application form to the Liberty Healthcare Corporation at (919) 307-8307. Seniors must have parts of the form completed by a doctor. Seniors who have questions about this program can call (855) 740-1400.
Veterans Aid and Attendance Program
Veterans and survivors who need help paying for assisted living may be able to receive an increased amount in addition to their monthly pension from the Veterans Aid and Attendance Program.
To qualify for this program, seniors must be eligible for a VA pension and meet at least one of the following requirements:
