Bellarose was lovely. It's a new facility, but they didn't have a ground floor apartment available. The person I met with was very nice. It was a lovely facility. It was just the availability of first floor apartments is hard to come by and it was a little bit more expensive than what I'm paying now. Meals were included, and there were activities. There was a pool and a gym. The apartment size was average and there wasn't a lot of storage, but they had their own washer and dryer in each unit, which was nice. Everything was clean and new. The staff was very nice and very helpful. They weren't letting anyone in the dining room at all. I had a brief tour of the vacant apartment they had, but they were still on pretty strict lockdown. They had a pool.

We have chosen Legend at Mingo Road for my sister-in-law. I visit there a lot with friends. It has always been a warm, really pretty place. I feel my sister-in-law would be comfortable there. It's not a really big place. Nice residents. I heard the food is good. It looks like my sister-in-law is going to have a nice view. It's very small compared to what she's used to, but it's still a quiet place. I like that, too. The staff who helped me and talked to me was very nice and helpful. The building was lovely.

I went by Legend at Mingo Road when we were touring for my father-in-law's move, and the striking thing about there is walking in and going into one of the rooms to view the room it smelled heavily of urine. The facility looked great, but that aroma of urine is a quick turnoff. Because of that experience, I make sure that people know that's not a good place to go. They could've cleaned it up, and they may not always smell that way, but it sure smelled of pee when we went. The staff was friendly and positive. I even commented on it, "It smells like pee in here." They had a television room and it had books in it, but they didn't have a lot of communal gathering areas from what I saw. They did menu type style meals. The place was acceptable, but not the best.

Mom moved into here in January 2019. We're really happy with it and we like it. The room is nice, we're happy with it. We're also happy with the staff They do bingo, and things have been changed because of Covid. They used to do field trips and used to go to Walmart. I know they do have a man that comes out and plays the piano every couple of weeks. Mom enjoys that, but most of the activity she's not really able to participate in. The food is good. Some is better than others, but for the most part it's pretty good.

We moved into Cedarhurst of Woodland Hills. With the restrictions as far as the flu here, we were forced to wear a mask. I got a health issue that prevents me from wearing a mask, so we basically were confined in our room. We were not able to do anything. I don't know anybody who was really involved in any of the activities. It seemed a fairly nice place, but it didn't work out. My wife's memory condition was getting much worse. I needed to do something and hopefully got her more involved, so I decided to move her to a memory care facility. At Cedarhurst of Woodland Hills, we were quarantined in the room for the first 14 days. We had to wear a mask if we left the room, but I just cannot breathe through a mask. We had a two-bedroom apartment. They had single bedrooms and studios, too. They had planned activities as well as various things you could do, but I'm not sure what they were. They had a swimming pool outside, but that would be for during the summer months. We hardly got out of our room. I couldn't leave my wife and she couldn't leave the room for any length of time because of her memory problems. The staff for the most part was reasonably good. The only complaint I had was they were supposed to clean the rooms on a weekly basis. We didn't have any room-cleaning at all for the first month. We set up Fridays for the apartment to be cleaned, and I think they cleaned it five times out of the three months we were there. The facility itself was fairly decent.

Legend at Tulsa Hills is beautiful, very new and clean, and there are no bad smells or anything like that. I haven't really gotten in there much because of the quarantine. I was able to try the food, which was really good. My interactions with the staff have all been mostly by phone, but they all seemed very caring and seem to be working really hard to take care of all the residents. We're very impressed with it so far. The food was brought to my father's room on the night I was there, and it was still hot and the flavors were good. They have a theater room, so they have movie nights, and during sports seasons they'll have football parties and things for the residents to watch on the big screen. They have bingo, puzzles, poker parties, church services, music, and somebody will come in and play the piano and they'll sing.

We like the Country Club At Woodland Hills. It is the best and the place is clean. They have interesting menus that are very good. We got to partake of the meals, and they were just excellent. The place is clean including the individual rooms and the common spaces. They have multiple offerings to keep you busy including the weight room and the health room. They have a multipurpose room, too. It seems like there are several activities going on. The administration is involved in some of the day-to-day things and they are very personable to us. The Country Club is in a good location, too. It is the best. Their geography is a lot better in the town. The staff took necessary time to see that we were comfortable particularly at the meals that we got what we liked, i.e., that the hot foods were hot and that the cold foods were cold. There was a camaraderie among the guests. The staff seemed to be very adept to the needs of the clients that live there. It really caught our attention and we enjoyed our visit.

The national Medicaid program provides medical insurance to Americans who meet income and asset guidelines. Funding for this program comes from federal and state sources, and Oklahoma’s Medicaid program, SoonerCare, is administered by the Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA). To be eligible for SoonerCare, applicants must meet income and financial resource criteria. Due to enrollment caps placed on this program, seniors may be placed on a waiting list after their application is approved. Seniors seeking assisted living arrangements can apply for the state’s Medicaid Waivers/Home and Community Based Services program. To be eligible, an individual’s income can’t exceed $2,313 per month. For married couples, the limit is $4,500. The program also has an asset limit of $2,000 for individual applicants and $4,000 for married couples. If only one spouse is applying, the applicant must meet the individual financial guidelines. But, there is an income disregard allowed to cover living expenses for the non-applicant spouse, who can also have up to $126,420 in assets. Countable assets include bank accounts, second homes, cash, investments, stocks and bonds. Other assets, such as personal belongings, one vehicle, burial trusts, household furnishings and a primary home, are exempt. The home’s value must be $585,000 or less. There are two Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) waivers available under SoonerCare to aid seniors who wish to remain in their community.
SSI State Supplement Oklahoma offers SSI State Supplemental payments to those in assisted living facilities who are at least 65 years old and are unable to live independently due to age-related health concerns or disabilities. Cash payments are given monthly and can be applied toward room-and-board expenses. Individuals can receive a maximum of $42 per month, and couples receive up to $84. Maximum allowances increase if a senior is eligible for federal funds as well. To find out more, contact the Oklahoma Department of Human Services at (877) 751-2972. Veterans Aid and Attendance Benefits Oklahoma veterans, and their surviving spouses, over the age of 65 who are eligible for a pension may apply for Aid and Attendance benefits to add to their monthly payments if they require assistance with activities of daily living. Eligible veterans can receive benefits of up to $1,881 per month; married couples receive up to $2,230, and surviving spouses receive up to $1,210. For more details on this program, contact the regional VA benefit office at (800) 827-1000. Assisted Living Bridge Loans Seniors who are ready to make the move into an assisted living facility but don’t have the funds to cover initial expenses can apply for an assisted living bridge loan from Elderlife Financial Services. These loans generally have short terms of up to 12 months and offer a solution for those waiting on benefit payouts or funds from the sale of a home. If approved, seniors can receive their money as one lump sum or as a line of credit in as little as 24 hours. The loan is subject to credit approval, but multiple co-borrowers are accepted, even if they are not related to the primary applicant. To learn more or start an application, call Elderlife Financial Services at (888) 228-4500.
