My mother-in-law has been a resident at the Phoenix at Harrisonburg for over a year and has really enjoyed it and highly recommends. Management is great – always helps to resolve problems. Staff are extremely helpful and very good at what they do. Beautiful clean facility – that is well-kept inside and out. I love seeing their seasonal décor in the lobby area. Everything in the facility is easy for her to navigate with her rollator. The maintenance guy is excellent and always quick to hang items on the wall when asked. The chef is always open to meal suggestions and feedback. The Phoenix location is perfect – very close to the hospital which is convenient for doctor appointments. Mother-in-law really enjoys the craft activities and bus trips (some of her favorites include Gift and Thrift, library, getting ice cream, Green Valley Book Fair, and looking at Christmas lights). Activities and outings have all increased since the Phoenix at Harrisonburg has grown. She also enjoys it when outside groups come for activities – such as musicians and local schools. My husband and I have attended various activities during her stay and have really enjoyed them – such as Christmas Open House, Thanksgiving family meal, bingo, family breakfast, Valentine’s Day dance, and Mother’s Day tea. She loves the snacks and drinks put out in the bistro area for the residents. We have really enjoyed using the activity room for larger family get-together’s – layout and ability to reserve makes it super easy and convenient for our holiday meal. Phoenix is best fit for our needs.

Our mom is a new resident and our family could not be happier! Nellie, the staff and the ladies that our mom live with are top notch. We are so grateful that we were referred to and made the choice to have mom in a safe, clean, loving environment. First impressions- CLEAN, CARING, SUPPORTIVE! Our mom has advanced dementia, requires more hands-on care than most of the ladies, and she fits in just fine.

I have a family member at this location. I never dreamed I could place my family member in such a lovely environment. The grounds are beautiful, plenty of space to take a walk, sit outside and soak up some sun, or enjoy a shaded patio. I visit several times a week and have not once left worried. The residential rooms are spacious and clean. The common areas are relaxing and well furnished. The residents are all relaxed and quite comfortable in their surroundings. There are no offending odors!! I could not ask for a better staff. From the office down each person I’ve met is friendly, kind and will happily assist in any way they can. They are so very caring, professional and patient with the residents. The decision to place a loved one is hard, hard, hard. Each time I leave from visiting her I have a smile and I’m encouraged that I’ve made the right choice for her. She is well cared for, they have several daily activities from puzzles to fitness as well as games and activities to improve cognitive and memory skills. I find myself thinking I’d like to move there myself! Look no further, this is a well run home for your family member.

This facility is by far the worst place to have a loved one in. The facility is very old and outdated. The hospital beds are completely outdated and not suitable for anyone, let alone sick/ill patients. The staff here should be completely revamped, to say that the staff is incompetent is actually an understatement. The nurses, are not capable of doing their jobs, they are lack basic knowledge and they are very rude and impatient with the patients. The doctors, Dr. Roberto Camacho, specifically, should not by any means be in any type of health care! This chauvinistic, uneducated man, lacks basic knowledge as well! He had no bedside manner, he was extremely rude to my mother(patient) as well as my family! He is incapable of doing his job! My mother was basically discharged with nothing to come home with and my family has been trying to reach the social worker for Garden Terrace, with several failed attempts of course. My mother is currently at home, and she has made “0” progress after being there 15+ days. The physical therapy is below average at Garden Terrace. Everyone single staff member from the nurses, doctors, food administration, social workers, etc. all should reconsider their professions immediately! I absolutely hated this place! I hated every day my mother was there. Please don’t have anyone you love and cherish placed here at Garden Terrace! If I could give this place -5 rating I would!

The manager is mean to the elderly. She yells at them in the hall for others to hear. She is not willing to work with them if they are late on rent even though they are aware they are all on social security and not everyone receives SS on the 1st of the month. They don’t take care of repairs because it cuts into staff’s bonus. They don’t treat the dog park for flees and other insects. It’s sad!

I went to Ella Springs Senior Living Community. I liked it a lot. It's farther away from me, and I didn't like the layout of the apartments, but it was very nice. It was really pretty, they were very informative, and they walked me around. It was big, and I only saw the assisted living side. It would be a good place for somebody, but it just didn't fit our needs. What impressed me was it was owned by two men, not a company, and they were really hands on there. One of the men called me to confirm my appointment, he told me about the VA benefits that you could apply for, which no other place told me about. That impressed me. I liked that it's individually owned and not a corporation.

I went to Ella Springs Senior Living Community. It was a very nice facility and I liked it a lot. The staff was nice. They have a lot of activities. I was there around lunch time, I just saw the menu, and it looked good. They showed me two-bedrooms, and I liked the fact that they had molding, there was plenty of room, plenty of carpet. It was very nice, but it wasn't real fancy.
Based on data from Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care study, the average monthly cost of care for assisted living services in Harris County ($3,863) is just under the national average of $4,000. The most expensive area nearby for assisted living services is the Austin area ($5,190) followed by Victoria ($4,370).
Senior care cost data was not available for Harris County, so data for the Houston area was used.

Texans over the age of 65 who receive Supplemental Security Income or require long-term care services may be eligible for Texas Medicaid or the state’s Medicaid buy-in program. Texas delivers many of its Medicaid services through managed care organizations, and benefits include physician appointments, hospital stays, prescription medications, lab work and other diagnostics, such as X-rays. Eligible seniors may also receive dental, vision and hearing benefits.
Texas seniors with limited income who receive SSI are eligible for Medicaid. Seniors may receive reimbursement for services rendered up to three months prior to the start of SSI benefits. For additional information, potential applicants should visit YourTexasBenefits.
State residents over the age of 65 who require 30 or more days of long-term care and meet income requirements may qualify for Medicaid for long-term care. Eligible applicants must not have possessions over a designated value, nor can they be in the process of paying for such items. Some exclusions apply, including burial funds, houses, cars and certain types of life insurance. The state provides a screening tool to help potential applicants determine whether their income and assets fall within the approved range.
Texas also has a Medicaid buy-in program, which is open to working residents who have physical, mental, intellectual or developmental disabilities and need medical benefits. To be eligible, applicants cannot reside full-time in a nursing facility, state hospital or an intermediate care home for intellectually disabled individuals. If qualified, individuals may buy into Texas Medicaid services for a designated monthly cost.
To receive additional information or to apply, Texas residents should visit YourTexasBenefits.com.
Texas Community Care for the Aged/Disabled
CCAD, which is governed by Texas Health and Human Services, helps low-income seniors at risk of nursing home placement maintain their independence, providing them with personal services in their home or in an assisted living facility. Program benefits include consumer-managed personal attendant services, which allow an eligible senior to designate a caregiver, including a family member. CCAD also covers personal emergency alert systems, which reduce the need for 24-hour oversight. Seniors residing in assisted living facilities may receive residential personal care at the facility.
While benefits may vary according to the individual’s living arrangement, some standard eligibility requirements apply. Applicants must be legal Texas residents with income less than three times the Supplemental Security Income payment. An applicant’s assets must not exceed $5,000 for individuals and $6,000 for couples, although this amount may vary depending on the benefit sought. Applicants who are eligible for identical services through Texas Medicaid programs should not apply.
Interested individuals can contact their local Aging and Disability Resource Center for additional information or to apply.
VA Aid and Attendance Program
Veterans and surviving spouses in need of financial aid for assisted living may be eligible for funding through the VA Aid and Attendance Program, which aims to offset assisted living expenses. Applicants must be 65 or older and require help with activities of daily living.
The application includes complex eligibility requirements, which factor in an applicant’s unreimbursed medical expenses. Since the process may be confusing to some individuals, potential applicants should visit their local VA benefits office for information or to apply.
Assisted Living Bridge Loans
Seniors in need of short-term funding may qualify for an assisted living bridge loan, which can fund up to 12 months of residential care payments. Although these loans may charge high interest rates, they can potentially be a viable option for seniors with benefits pending or those awaiting the payout from a home sale. Bridge loans can be dispersed as a lump sum payment or taken as a line of credit, depending upon an individual’s needs, and may be used to cover the initial expenses of moving to a facility.
Multiple co-borrowers may apply for a bridge loan, lessening the importance of individual creditworthiness and potentially increasing approval odds. Plus, since family members, rather than the senior, apply for a bridge loan, the senior’s age and health don’t impact the chance of approval. Elderlife Financial Services does require information regarding the anticipated source of permanent funding. Families can expect quick response times once their application is submitted.
For further information or to apply, potential applicants can contact Elderlife Financial Services.
