I have a family member at this location. I never dreamed I could place my family member in such a lovely environment. The grounds are beautiful, plenty of space to take a walk, sit outside and soak up some sun, or enjoy a shaded patio. I visit several times a week and have not once left worried. The residential rooms are spacious and clean. The common areas are relaxing and well furnished. The residents are all relaxed and quite comfortable in their surroundings. There are no offending odors!! I could not ask for a better staff. From the office down each person I’ve met is friendly, kind and will happily assist in any way they can. They are so very caring, professional and patient with the residents. The decision to place a loved one is hard, hard, hard. Each time I leave from visiting her I have a smile and I’m encouraged that I’ve made the right choice for her. She is well cared for, they have several daily activities from puzzles to fitness as well as games and activities to improve cognitive and memory skills. I find myself thinking I’d like to move there myself! Look no further, this is a well run home for your family member.

This facility is by far the worst place to have a loved one in. The facility is very old and outdated. The hospital beds are completely outdated and not suitable for anyone, let alone sick/ill patients. The staff here should be completely revamped, to say that the staff is incompetent is actually an understatement. The nurses, are not capable of doing their jobs, they are lack basic knowledge and they are very rude and impatient with the patients. The doctors, Dr. Roberto Camacho, specifically, should not by any means be in any type of health care! This chauvinistic, uneducated man, lacks basic knowledge as well! He had no bedside manner, he was extremely rude to my mother(patient) as well as my family! He is incapable of doing his job! My mother was basically discharged with nothing to come home with and my family has been trying to reach the social worker for Garden Terrace, with several failed attempts of course. My mother is currently at home, and she has made “0” progress after being there 15+ days. The physical therapy is below average at Garden Terrace. Everyone single staff member from the nurses, doctors, food administration, social workers, etc. all should reconsider their professions immediately! I absolutely hated this place! I hated every day my mother was there. Please don’t have anyone you love and cherish placed here at Garden Terrace! If I could give this place -5 rating I would!

I went to Ella Springs Senior Living Community. I liked it a lot. It's farther away from me, and I didn't like the layout of the apartments, but it was very nice. It was really pretty, they were very informative, and they walked me around. It was big, and I only saw the assisted living side. It would be a good place for somebody, but it just didn't fit our needs. What impressed me was it was owned by two men, not a company, and they were really hands on there. One of the men called me to confirm my appointment, he told me about the VA benefits that you could apply for, which no other place told me about. That impressed me. I liked that it's individually owned and not a corporation.

Atria Cinco Ranch was very inviting. They were very informative and very friendly. I just saw their one-bedroom, and it was very clean and spacious. They also had all sorts of activities planned on their huge calendar. They had a dining room, a fitness room, a garden, and a courtyard. The facility was well-maintained, and everybody was very nice. Based on when we walked through the building, the food was not really good. Their menu was very detailed. The person who toured us said that the food is made from scratch, and based on COVID, they are getting their food delivered on each floor. One floor would be eating in the dining, while all the other floors would be eating in their rooms through their room service, and they rotate each floor, each day.

I went to Ella Springs Senior Living Community. It was a very nice facility and I liked it a lot. The staff was nice. They have a lot of activities. I was there around lunch time, I just saw the menu, and it looked good. They showed me two-bedrooms, and I liked the fact that they had molding, there was plenty of room, plenty of carpet. It was very nice, but it wasn't real fancy.

When my parents stayed at Tarrytowne Estates, we never had a single issue with any of the staff, from the sales person to the managers, as well as the bookkeeping; they were all great. They have opened up some of their space to allow any physician to come in and work with the residents who choose to have him. He was of great quality, too, and that was not my experience elsewhere with the doctors they were working with. I was just very, very pleased with those results. They offer a variety of floor plans in the community. When she and my dad first moved there, they were moving from a larger residence, and I knew that the adjustment to a lesser space would be a concern, so we started out with a two-bedroom apartment for the two of them and then downsized to a one-bedroom. After my dad passed away, she eventually went to an efficiency type of apartment. They were all good, they had ample space, and we had no issues with it. I like the fact that they have walk-in showers, and they got rid of the old bathtubs. They really worked hard to have a good quality to what they had. They also have plenty of activities, but my mom didn't do a whole lot of them. One thing that my parents were not satisfied with from all of the other communities they went in was the food, but Tarrytown Estates has an on-site chef. They don't bring their food in, and it's always served hot. The homemade rolls and the homemade desserts are just of high quality, and that is an important aspect for senior citizens. I could not match their value anywhere else.

Atria Cinco Ranch was very nice, and they called back to check on me. My husband and I used to live in Cinco Ranch, so that was one of the reasons I liked the area. It was close to the church I used to attend and that was a big plus, too. It's a very nice and clean place. I liked the fact that they had quite a few activities. I'm looking at the brochure and they had a featured event. There was a Casino Royale part, which they said was like Bingo travelling, they had Oktoberfest party going on, and they had a Christmas tree decorating coming up later on. It was nice, and I appreciate the fact that they were having get-togethers, activities, and things. They were very friendly and knew what they were talking about. They had a lady executive director, and she's sent a letter that was very sweet and very touching. They had a printed literature that was very informative and I felt like it helped out a lot because obviously I brought it home and kept it in my folder of places I've been able to visit, so that when I can go out again, I'll be able to remember the ones I was at. It's probably September or so since I've been there, and I was able to go in. I remember it was easy to navigate, and they were very good.

I went to Atria Cinco Ranch. They were able to show me a room, we walked through the buildings, it was well kept, there were people in the common areas. We could speak to them, they spoke to us, and could just ask them how well they liked the place, and they seemed to be fairly happy. The staff seemed to be pretty knowledgeable of what was going on, and what their role was.

Lone Star Living is very nice. It's independent living, and my friend has her own apartment but with 24/7 care and 3 meals a day are provided. They have a wonderful staff, a very nice facility. They are very accommodating, caring, and nice people. They have quite a few activities but that we haven't ventured into yet. From what I can see and heard, the food is very good. I'm petty happy with it.

The type of care required is the most significant factor that influences the cost of senior care in Houston and throughout the country. In Houston, the cost of nursing home care is more than $1,000 higher than the cost of assisted living. When compared with home care, the cost of assisted living is only slightly less. However, it’s important to consider other costs that are associated with continuing to live in the home when budgeting for home care, such as rent, utilities, groceries and home maintenance, which make home care a far more expensive option. Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Houston
Medicaid in Texas
Texas’ STAR+PLUS is the state’s Medicaid managed care program. It’s specifically designed for residents of Texas who are living with disabilities and those who are aged 65 or older. The program covers a range of services including assisted living or home care, access to medical care, case management and social support.
Senior applicants of this program must be 65 years of age or older and reside in Texas. They must also fall under one of the following categories:
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients
- Eligible for the STAR+PLUS Home and Community Based Services waiver
- Medicaid recipients accessing the program through a Social Security exclusion program
- Seniors residing in a nursing home while receiving Medicaid
- Those enrolled in Medicaid’s Breast and Cervical Cancer program
It’s also necessary for applicants to require full-time support and assistance with daily living or to require full-time medical supervision. To be approved for the STAR+PLUS program, seniors must also meet the financial eligibility requirements of the program, as follows:
- Individual income may not exceed $750 per month
- Individual assets may not exceed a value of $2,000, excluding the applicant’s home
This program is capped and only accepts a specified number of applicants each year. Seniors must re-apply annually to continue in the program. Further details about eligibility and how to apply can be obtained by calling 1-866-566-8989.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
Community First Choice
The CFC option is part of the state’s Medicaid program. It’s designed to help seniors avoid further institutionalization by providing medical care and regular nurse visits to those who reside in assisted living facilities or who are receiving home care. The program provides seniors the chance to choose care providers when possible.
CFC is an entitlement program, which means that the eligibility requirements are more flexible. Applicants must be 65 years of age or older and require daily support to be eligible for this program. Applicants are also required to meet the financial eligibility requirements of the state Medicaid program. For more information on eligibility and how to apply, seniors can contact 1-866-566-8989.
Community Care for the Aged and Disabled (CCAD)
The CCAD program is a non-Medicaid program that’s run by the state of Texas’ Department of Health and Human Services. The program provides care options to seniors who choose to remain in their home or who live in an assisted living facility.
To be eligible, seniors must be residents of Texas who are not receiving Medicaid. They must also require daily care and meet the program’s financial requirements, as follows:
- Individual income may not exceed $2,250 per month
- Individual assets may not exceed a value of $5,000
- To apply, seniors can visit their local Aging and Disability Resource Center or call 1-855-937-2372.
Optional State Supplement
Seniors who require additional financial support to help pay for the cost of room and board in an assisted living facility or long-term care home may apply for an optional state supplement(OSS). OSS payments are provided to seniors who receive long-term care and are a supplement to federal SSI payments.
The amount of OSS received is calculated based on the senior’s income and budgetary needs. Seniors can apply by contacting the Texas Department of Health and Human Services at 1-855-937-2372.
