We moved my mother from another facility to Discovery Village a year ago and we’re very pleased with the care my mother received in memory care. The care and compassion she received from the staff was wonderful and it was evident they really care about their residents. We definitely recommend Discovery and even recently moved my in-laws into their assisted living.

We visited, and the lady, Carrie Anne, was fantastic. The safety precautions were there and in place, and the residence was immaculate. I toured the whole facility and was given several options. Of course, the cost came into play. They had a lot of activities for them.

The Waterford at Thousand Oaks is very affordable, nice, and clean, and the staff is friendly and helpful. I saw both a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom, and I would definitely give both of them five stars. They were a nice size compared to everything I've seen. I saw activities going on, and they had a lot of options for interested people. I saw the dining room, the workout room, the library, and the craft room.

My sister is moving here. The staff is very helpful and very involved. The rooms are very spacious compared to some of the other ones I've seen. They don't have an exercise room, so that was one negative, but they hold exercise classes, so that wasn't a deciding factor for us. There are plenty of activities, and they have courtyards and a pool.

I went to Madison Estates. It was nice, but the residents were of an older generation than the other place I went to. They're very friendly and helpful. The staff is great. It was a fairly good size and first class. I think they did have some transportation, and they did have meals. It felt homey.

The Waterford on Huebner was a very, very nice facility. I think my friends said that it's a smaller facility, more of a close knit group, so it was more closely monitored. If someone did not show up for lunch they were gonna check on them. It was just the rooms were very small. They didn't offer the kitchenette that my client was wanting for her mother, but the people were nice, and the whole area was just gorgeous, beautiful, and very clean. I only saw the great room where everyone was hanging out for games and so forth. They offered us snacks and water, so it was nice.

Adante Independent Living was very nice. The apartments were excellent and it's very elegant. The staff during the visit was amazing. I didn't eat the food, but the dining area looked like a hotel. There's a whole list of activities; you can find them on the web. They had a movie theater, a swimming pool, a pool for billiards, video games, a library, a hair salon, an arts studio, exercise classes, there's always bingo and bingo parlor, and cards. They had everything you could imagine. It's very exclusive.

I really liked Madison Estates. I liked that it was independent living and that's something that my friend is looking for. I like the apartment setup. I like the fact that she has the ability to come and go, and that gives her a sense that she is independent still. They had 2-bedroom apartments, which she doesn't need, but it was very interesting that they offered that. The staff was very nice. When I visited the property, I found out that I had a friend that's elderly too that lived there. They had the little patio area, some bigger than others. They had the facility setup for safety reasons because of Covid. It's a little different now, but they still have limited activities. They have a choice whether they can go and be a part of the activities or not. I really enjoyed the tour. They explained everything to me.

We went to The Waterford at Thousand Oaks. it was conveniently located, the apartment that we were shown was a two-bedroom, it was very nice, they said that they had just put new flooring in, and it was on the main floor, which I think my friends were wanting to have. I did not feel like we really got a very adequate tour. We were not shown any other apartments, the gal that did the tour said, "These are the amenities, would you like to go see them?" not, "Here, let me show you what we have to offer." I thought it was pretty incomplete.

Care Cost Comparison
When it comes to long-term care in San Antonio and throughout the rest of the country, the level of care required is the most significant factor influencing the cost of care. Although nursing care in the city is nearly $1,000 more than the cost of assisted living in San Antonio, home care and assisted living services are similarly priced. That being said, it’s important to consider the additional costs associated with continuing to live at home, such as rent, utilities and general upkeep, which can significantly affect the budget when long-term care is required. Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in San Antonio
Medicaid in Texas
Throughout Texas, eligible seniors can access the state’s STAR+PLUS program, which is a Medicaid managed care program that’s exclusive to those with disabilities and seniors aged 65 and older. Participants of this program receive a range of benefits that include assisted living services or home care, as well as access to necessary medical care, case management and social support.
To be eligible for this program, seniors must be aged 65 or older and fall under one of the following categories:
- Receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Eligible for the STAR+PLUS Home and Community Based Services waiver
- Receiving Medicaid through a Social Security exclusion program
- Residing in a nursing home and receiving Medicaid
- In Medicaid’s Breast and Cervical Cancer program
Additionally, applicants should require full-time care and assistance with their activities of daily living or full-time medical supervision to be eligible for the program and are subject to financial eligibility requirements. Individual applicants may not earn more than $750 per month and may not own assets totaling more than $2,000; however, the applicant’s home does not count as an asset in this scenario. There are caps on the number of applicants who may enroll in this program, and waiting lists are typically quite long. Seniors can receive further information about eligibility and how to apply by calling 1-866-566-8989.
Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
Community First Choice
The CFC option is a Medicaid program that is designed to prevent seniors who are living in their homes or in assisted living facilities from becoming further institutionalized in a nursing home as the need for care increases. This program provides basic assisted living services to seniors who without daily support would require a nursing level of care. This program provides access to self-directed care, which means that participants have more flexibility when it comes to choosing who provides their care.
The CFC option is an entitlement program, which means that eligibility requirements are less stringent and there is no cap on the number of seniors who may apply. To be eligible for this program, seniors must be 65 years of age or older, require daily support and meet the financial requirements of the state Medicaid program. For more information on eligibility and how to apply, seniors can contact the state Medicaid office at 1-866-566-8989.
Community Care for the Aged and Disabled (CCAD)
The CCAD program is a state-run, non-Medicaid program that provides care services to seniors who wish to avoid moving into a nursing home. Seniors may receive care under this program in their home or within an assisted living facility. Assisted living residents who participate in this program are eligible to receive coverage for the cost of services.
To be eligible for this program, applicants must be residents of Texas, may not currently receive Medicaid and must require daily care. Financial eligibility requirements are more lenient than Medicaid. Individual applicants may not earn more than $2,250 per month, and total assets may not be valued at more than $5,000. To apply, seniors can visit their local Aging and Disability Resource Center or call 1-855-937-2372.
Optional State Supplement
The Texas Department of Health and Human Services aids those who require additional funding for long-term care by supplementing federal SSI payments with a state top-up, known as an optional state supplement (OSS). OSS payments are meant to assist seniors in paying for room and board costs in an assisted living facility or other long-term care home.
To be eligible, seniors must receive SSI from the federal government. Benefit amounts are determined by a variety of factors, including the applicant’s income and budgetary needs. To apply, seniors can contact the Texas Department of Health and Human Services at 1-855-937-2372
